In Acts 17, Paul in Athens preached a sermon that ended with a call to repentance. Today's church, especially in America, has softened the gospel quite a bit. Many television preachers major on health and wealth. Others concentrate on acceptance and rarely mention sin or repentance. Yet in the great revivals of the past, the major emphasis was conviction of sin and calling people to repentance. Instead of laughter, there was mourning followed by rejoicing. Today, the mourning over sin is absent from the modern church and calls for repentance are seldom heard from modern preachers. But Paul preached repentance and called the Athenians to turn from their idols unto the true God. Many did repent. If we expect revival to take place in this nation again, we are going to have to hear a different message than we are hearing today for the most part. Revival is not going to come through health and wealth sermons or sermons preaching only acceptance without a mention of accountability for sin and a need for true heart repentance. Paul preached repentance and that's what we need to hear today.
