Tony Bird in Love Rules: The Ten Commandments for the 21st Century wrote, "The tenth commandment addresses the cult of money, which makes the accumulation of material things the measure and goal of life." (p. 88) Today, we live in a covetous society with all kinds of greed. Whether it's the greed of giant oil companies with record profits or the prosperity preachers seeking after wealth, our society is permeated with covetousness. Jeremiah 6:13-14 says, "From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit. They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. 'Peace, peace,' they say, when there is no peace." Covetousness is a heart problem that shows itself in the attitudes and actions of the society. Bird goes on to say, "In many ways the commandment can be seen as a summary of the preceding ones because it goes behind the act to the thoughts and motives of the heart." (p. 90) Advertisers continually tantalize us with all kinds of allurements to buy their products whether it be sex, pleasure, or luxury. Our society is sick with greed and we don't realize the seriousness of our sin before God. We need to rid ourselves of a covetous heart. We have a heart problem in our society and we need to attend to it before it is too late.
