It has been said that the church was God's plan B. Since the Jews rejected Jesus, God changed course and brought about another plan which was the church. This church was not prophesied in the Old Testament and the church age was a gap in God's plan for Israel. So, say many today. But is this all true? Was the church really God's plan B? If the church was God's plan B, then the cross also must have been God's plan B. It says in Acts 20:28 as Paul addresses the Ephesian elders, "Guard yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood." Now if Jesus bought the church of God with His own blood, then the church and the cross are directly connected. If the church was God's plan B, then also the cross must have been God's plan B. But is this really true? Is this really what the Bible teaches? Does not God have a sovereign plan that He is carrying out in history? Is not the cross and the church a part of that sovereign plan? If the cross was predicted in the Old Testament which it certainly was, then also the church was part of that prediction because they are directly connected. Without the cross, there is no church. The cross was not God's plan B. It was a part of his master plan, the plan He had from the beginning. Jesus being nailed to the cross was carrying out God's plan. God has His plan for history and it is being carried out. There are no surprises to God. He knows what He is doing. There is no plan B with God. He has a master plan and He will see it through to the end.
