When an insurance company withholds funds for life saving medical care in order to save money, is this a breaking of the sixth commandment? When a government has laws that are unjust and that withhold needed funds from the poor who need medical attention in order to save life, does this break the sixth commandment? When a nation approves laws that promote the killing of unborn children, is this not a breaking of the sixth commandment? When a government approves the unjust torturing of prisoners of war, is this not breaking the sixth commandment? When a nation engages in a war that is unjust or questionable and thus promotes the killing of many people, is this not in some way breaking the sixth commandment? When a nation has laws that do not prevent but rather promote the taking away of life from the helpless, does this not break the sixth commandment? When a state passes a law that allows physicians to assist patients in committing suicide, does this not break the sixth commandment?When an individual harbors hatred in his heart toward someone, is this not breaking the sixth commandment? There are many ways to break the sixth commandment. Its application can be made in so many areas of life. Its implications apply not only to individuals but to governments and companies. We are called to promote the sanctity of human life. Whether this means for a nation to provide or promote a means whereby its citizens can get proper health care or for an individual to refrain from killing another human being in revenge, the sixth commandment is all pervasive in its application.
