Jesus died on the cross. He rose from the dead and He ascended into Heaven to the right hand of God the Father. From there He received the Holy Spirit from the Father and poured out the Spirit on His disciples at Pentecost. Jesus went away but He sent the Holy Spirit in His name to be with His church and empower her for her great task of world evangelization.
