The great commander of the American forces issued his general orders to his troops saying, "The General hopes and trusts, that every officer and man. will endeavor so to live, and act, as becomes a Christian Soldier defending the dearest Rights and Liberties of his country." (Sacred Fire, p. 157) This order was given by General George Washington on July 9, 1776 during the Revolutionary War. Today, such an order would be considered "not politically correct." The general would probably be reprimanded or even lose his position as commander of the armed forces. Today, to talk about sin and the conviction of sin is also not politically correct. We just don't hear that many sermons today on sin or the conviction of sin or God's displeasure with our sin. Many things today which were considered sinful by earlier generations are considered acceptable behavior. People coming under conviction of sin and crying out for mercy is just not seen anymore - it's all out of style for today's generation. Yet, Jesus included in the Lord's Prayer a statement about our asking forgiveness for sin. He knew that we were sinners and that our sins would have to be dealt with. Every person listening to this sermon today is a sinner. You have sins that need to be dealt with. Jesus indicates that they need to be dealt with on a daily basis.
