One of the great things our country needs today is brokenness. We need to be broken and mournful over our sinful condition. We have gotten far from the integrity and righteousness of our forefathers. Generations who went before us were a more God fearing people than we are today. Former generations in this country were more gentle and moral and sincere in their reverence toward God. For example, over fifty years ago, the number one TV comedy series in America was the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriett and the Nelsons were looked on as America's best loved family. Even their episodes ended with a public service announcement by Ozzie encouraging Americans to attend church or synagogue that week and this was on a national TV network. Today, this generation ridicules such programs of the past and opts for something much more coarse and vulgar in comedy. Recently, my wife and I viewed an old movie made in 1929 starring Will Rogers. It was very funny and entertaining but it was also very moral and uplifting. We have lost something in today's culture that we need to gain back. Will it ever be possible to go back to a more gentler time? Jesus would expose much of the sin in our society today if He walked our streets. Yet, He doesn't have to do that. He has left us His Word and it speaks loud and clear to today's generation. We need brokenness as a people and we need to repent as a people in order to gain back the greatness that our nation once had. Today, we come to Jesus' teaching on prayer. He exposed the insincerity of the Scribes and Pharisees and calls us to be sincere and humble when we pray.
