References: Matthew 5

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus shows us the true meaning of God's Law. The Scribes and Pharisees had only been obeying it on the surface. They had completely missed the real meaning and depth of the Law. Jesus taught that we are to obey God's moral law from the heart and not just on the surface. He takes several of the Commandments and shows what they truly mean. He begins with the Sixth Commandment, You shall not kill and shows what it means to obey it from the heart. To be a true Christian is to love and obey God's law from the heart.
