What is the meaning of the cross? Jesus went to the cross. For what? What does it all signify? Why did He have to go to the cross? Couldn't He have saved us without all of that bloody gore? Why a blood sacrifice? These are all important questions. The fact is the cross is all about a blood atonement. It has to do very much with our sins. That's why it is so very important that we know that we are sinners in the sight of a Holy God. Unless we realize our own sinfulness we wil not appreciate what the blood atonement on the cross was all about. Today, there is such a de-emphasis on sin. Sermons hardly mention sin anymore to any great extent. Our sins are put in the background. Yet, it was all becuase of our sins that a blood atonement had to be offered on the cross. We have to understand that. When true revival comes, so does conviction of sin. The great revivals of the past all involved great conviction of sin coming on the people. The Holy Spirit comes first and foremost to convict us of our sins. Once we are convicted of our sins then we see the value in a blood atonement on the cross and we flee to Christ for refuge. It is the blood of Christ that saves us. It is only the blood of Christ that can save us because only the blood of Christ can blot out our sins.
