The church at Sardis needed to stop living on its past glories. Jesus told them to wake up, to strengthen their weak parts, to hold fast to the truth - and above all, to repent.

Jesus had something to commend all the churches for - but not the church at Sardis. He said that they were really dead. They had adapted to the culture, and they were no longer confronting it.
