One telltale sign of a saint is their love for the Bible. People who are redeemed will look upon the Word as a personal letter from God to them. A book takes on a different meaning when you know the author.

What is a saint? Is it someone who is close to being perfect? The Bible refers to believers as saints. They are people with two addresses: They are living in the world but they are citizens of heaven.

Nehemiah's story ends as he contends with the people over their straying from the Lord. They had become secular, greedy and lax in their faith, and Nehemiah knew a fire needs to be tended or it will go out.

After the people had made a covenant to follow God, Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem to find they had backslidden. Moses experienced this also, with the Israelites in the desert, and so did Paul, with the churches he established.

The purpose of church discipline is to win a person's soul, and to restore them to the body of Christ. The tough discipline of Nehemiah is reminiscent of the way Jesus cleansed the temple.

In Nehemiah's absence, the priest gave one of his enemies a residence on the temple grounds. This illustrates what happens to our spiritual lives if we don't watch over them: They deteriorate.
