Our concern should always be with the message of Christ. Instead of focusing on troublesome people, we should build up those who edify and encourage, and then partner with them to build up the church.

Troublemakers may be found in any church, and they’re easily identified—they tend to be jealous, argumentative, and selfish. Paul wrote about such people in Philippians 1, the ones who tried to add to his troubles.

Paul's perspective on his imprisonment was that even in this, the gospel was furthered. He was able to reach the elite Roman guards with the message of Christ, and through them the house of Caesar itself.

The love of a Christian should be pure. That means it should be without any hypocrisy or ulterior motives. A Christian's love should glorify God, because this is the ultimate purpose of all love, and of all of life.

Paul tells the Philippians that their love should abound—that is, be plentiful and growing. Further, it should be perceptive: It should be appropriate to the situation, and based on knowledge rather than emotion.

God's work is an "inside job." God works in a person before he works through that person. So don't get discouraged, because God won't quit. He is committed to you.

As Paul sat in a jail, he was thankful for what God was doing in the church at Philippi. He was grateful for their "fellowship in the gospel," because he saw them as his partners in spreading the good news.

One telltale sign of a saint is their love for the Bible. People who are redeemed will look upon the Word as a personal letter from God to them. A book takes on a different meaning when you know the author.
