Fellowship is one of the main pillars of the church in Acts 2:42. Fellowship is more than just a social gathering. It’s meeting together for a spiritual purpose. The goal is to stimulate each other toward spiritual growth.

Preaching should lead to practicing. The church at Jerusalem heard the apostles’ doctrine, and they followed it. But not only that. They “continued steadfastly,” which means they persevered, even when they were under persecution.

A church can’t grow if it isn’t learning, and the first church in Jerusalem was a learning church. Acts 2:42 says it concentrated on the apostles’ doctrine. Peter, James and the others were teaching how all of scripture pointed to Jesus Christ.

When we gather together in church, it should be a time of commitment. As we sing songs and hear a sermon, we should ask, “What now?” And the answer should always be “Now I do what God spoke to me.”

Going to church is easy. Staying faithful to a church is a fine art. You can’t approach God on a ceremonial basis, and you can’t be superficial. You have to be sincere, and you have to listen as God speaks to you.

The desire of Jesus Christ for His Church is that we would be one, that there would be unity. That doesn’t mean that we’re all alike. It means that we agree on the essentials, and that we love each other.

Jesus Christ doesn’t want His Church to be a “bless me club.” He told His followers not to focus upon themselves but to “go into all the world.” He wants the church to rescue the enemies of God.
