In Nehemiah 8, the people showed the marks of a genuine revival: They heard the teaching of the Word, they worshipped God, they had remorse over their sin, and they obeyed what they had heard.

Nehemiah wanted leaders for the people, and he looked for men who were loyal, faithful, and reverential. Reverence, or fear of the Lord, is a humble submission to God, a love for Him, and a desire not to displease Him.

Nehemiah's enemies were still trying to stop the work on the city wall. First, they tried to distract him, and then they made false charges against him. Finally, they tried to scare him into hiding inside the temple.

The rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem was almost complete. But the enemies of the Jews hadn't gone away, and they were still intent upon stopping the work — just as satan wants to stop us from doing God's work.

Nehemiah’s response to the sin of the people is a great model for any counselor. He specifically identified the problem, he presented a plan to correct it, and he set up public accountability among the people.

The Jews in Jerusalem had successfully fended off attacks from the outside. But now they were taking financial advantage of one another and disobeying the commandments of God. Nehemiah's reaction was quick and decisive.

Nehemiah rallied the people by telling them to trust God. When they went back to rebuilding the wall, the people worked with a trowel in one hand and a sword in the other. They were builders but they were also fighters.
