Nehemiah's enemies ridiculed the building of the wall, but people of God merely prayed and kept on working. We should always let God do the retaliating because He takes it personally when His people are attacked.

God's work requires the involvement of all kinds of people. It wasn't stonemasons who rebuilt the wall around Jerusalem, it was everyone—priests, ordinary people, even artisans like goldsmiths. It was the faithfulness of the people that mattered.

To rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, Nehemiah assigned specific groups to certain sections of the wall. By delegating the responsibility, he insured the work would be done in an orderly fashion. Church leaders today need to follow this example.

Before beginning a task for the Lord, a godly leader will assess the need, and then he will surround himself with people who will support him. Finally, he will expect opposition from the enemy and be determined to stay at the job.

Nehemiah provides a lesson on being a leader in the work God wants to do. Prior to going before the king, Nehemiah spent a very long time in prayer and fasting, as he waited for God to give him a vision of what he should do.

Nehemiah had the right reaction upon hearing of Jerusalem's desolation: He fasted and prayed to the Lord, and then offered himself as a worker. Our reaction should be like that, asking God, "What do you want me to do for your kingdom?"

God wants our hearts to be moved over what moves His heart. Nehemiah wept when he heard of the condition of the city of Jerusalem, just as the Lord wept over its spiritual condition. Nehemiah's heart was moved to rebuild the city's protection.

Evangelism is vital because of the commission of Jesus to his disciples: "Go into all the world." Jesus is coming soon, and there is a limited amount of time to fulfill that commission. And, as He said, the fields are white for harvest.

God's character is to make His people a light to the world. It was true in Old Testament times, and it's true in the church age. All of us are missionaries, and the church that doesn't evangelize will eventually fossilize.

One means of praising the Lord is through music. It might be loud and rhythmic, as the music of ancient Israel probably was, or it might be the old hymns or the newer worship choruses. But the important thing is to make a joyful noise unto the Lord.

The Bible portrays the physical attitude of worship in many ways—falling down before the Lord, kneeling, raising hands, clapping, standing in respect. But all true worshippers come to the Lord in humility. Their focus is not on themselves, but on Him.
