God had a purpose for Abraham’s life, and that was to bless all nations through him. We can all say, “God made me for a purpose.” And we should try to find out what that purpose is.

The Lord appeared in human form to Abraham in Genesis 18. Abraham responded by serving Him personally, and with generosity. To be God’s friend, we must serve Him in all things.

In the Bible, God Himself refers to Abraham as His friend. As God’s friend, he had to get used to God changing his plans. And he always had to respond to the Lord in humility.

God gave circumcision as a symbol of His covenant with the Jews. It was a symbol of repentance. And repentance is still an uncomfortable message for people to hear.

When God gave Abram another chance, He also changed his name. “Abram” means “exalted father.” His new name, “Abraham,” means “father of a multitude.”

When Abram was 99 years old, God gave him a new commission. Even after all Abrams’s mistakes and all his disobedience, God still gave him another chance.

Abram and Sarah disobeyed God by trying to get a son through her maid, Hagar. This resulted in the conflict between the descendants of Isaac and Ishmael, which we still feel today.

In Genesis 15, Abram wanted confirmation that God would give him an inheritance. So God required Abram to prepare a very specific type of sacrifice to Him.

In God’s covenant with Abram, it was always God who initiated, and Abram who responded in faith. It’s the same with the New Covenant. God made the first move, and we respond to Him.
