Legalism in the church sends the wrong message - that you must do certain works in order to merit salvation. Legalists have it backward. Good works are the result of salvation, not the basis for it.

Joy is a byproduct of a relationship with the Lord. The circumstances and troubles of life will threaten that joy, so we must guard our joy by focusing on the only true source - the Lord Himself.

The essence of Epaphroditus is that he was a servant. As Christians, we should all learn from his example. And we should strive to show our appreciation to those who serve in the church.

Paul commended Epaphroditus as a spiritual brother, a hard worker for the gospel, and a caregiver. He was such a servant that he was concerned more for the church than for his own health.

Rapid advancement in ministry can cause a person to be proud. Conversely, Timothy's character had been tested and proven, and now Timothy was seen as a worthy stand-in for Paul himself.

Paul valued Timothy as a partner in the work of the gospel because of his excellence of character. Timothy and Paul were of one mind - their concern was for Jesus Christ rather than for self.

Crucifixion was a uniquely horrible form of execution. So when Philippians says that Jesus was "obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross," it shows the true humility of Christ.
