As we come to the end of the book of Genesis, we consider the faith, the testimony and the example of Jacob. He blesses, warns, and admonishes his children from his deathbed, and gives them a prophetic testimony.

Jacob pronounced a blessing when he said, “Judah, you are he whom your brothers shall praise.” His words were a prophecy of the coming of Christ, who is called “the Lion of Judah.”

At the end of his life, Jacob was focusing on God’s blessings for the first time. And he prophesied about each of his sons on his deathbed because he knew their individual characters.

On his deathbed, Jacob had things he wanted to set in order. The law said that the oldest son should receive a double portion, but Jacob chose to honor the younger of Joseph’s sons.

In Genesis 47, Jacob and his family settle in the land of Goshen. We see that God blessed Pharaoh because he blessed Israel. Later, God would curse another Pharaoh because he dealt harshly with Israel.

God promised Jacob that a great nation would come from him. And from the 70 people who went to Egypt, over two million returned to the land of Canaan under Moses 400 years later.

Joseph never stopped trusting in God's faithfulness. As we see when Joseph and Jacob are reunited, we must view all of life's challenges through the lens of God's sovereignty.

Genuine forgiveness doesn't parade people's sins in front of them. When Joseph forgave his brothers, he told them not to grieve or be angry with themselves, but to see that God was in control of everything.

When Judah was pleading for mercy for his brother Benjamin, Joseph knew he had changed. He was no longer a jealous man, but was sticking up for his father’s favorite son.

Joseph always saw life's difficulties through the filter of God's sovereignty. His vertical relationship with the Lord equipped him to restore his horizontal relationships with his brothers.

Joseph wanted to see what his brothers would do if the youngest, Benjamin, was in danger. So he tested them by hiding his silver cup in Benjamin’s belongings, and then threatening to make Benjamin a slave.
