Exodus 7, Part 3
June 22, 2012
God’s first plague turned the Nile River into blood. The Lord was targeting the belief in several of the false gods of Egypt. He was telling the Egyptians that their religion couldn’t quench their thirst.

Pharaoh wanted a sign that Moses and Aaron were speaking for the Lord — and Aaron’s staff became a snake. When the Egpytian magicians counterfeited this miracle, Aaron’s rod simply ate their serpents.

God told Moses to demand that Pharaoh let the Israelites go. But Pharaoh refused. Pharaoh made his own choice…but God fortified him in that choice.

Moses had presumed how and when God would fulfill His promise, and so he became discouraged. But God assured Moses that He would fulfill what He had promised to His people.

Instead of letting the Israelites go, Pharaoh increased their work and tried to get the people to turn on their leaders. So the people complained to Moses, and Moses complained to God.

Exodus 5 begins the great confrontation between Moses and Pharaoh. At first, Moses merely asks Pharaoh to let his people go. God gives Pharaoh a chance to comply willingly before He judges Egypt.

Moses complained that he wasn’t able to do the job, that he was afraid, that he wasn’t eloquent. But these were all just excuses…and God wanted his availability, not his ability.

God chose an unusual means to speak to Moses — through a burning bush. Fire is a symbol of God's glory, power, and presence. And His presence gives extraordinary status to ordinary surroundings.

Moses has spent 40 years in the wilderness working as a shepherd. And now God commissions him to lead the Israelites out of bondage. Moses had needed to learn the lesson of humility.

By not doing things God’s way, Moses spent 40 more years in the desert before he could become Israel’s deliverer. In the meantime, the people continued to cry out to God for help.

Moses was raised as a prince of Egypt, but he knew his true heritage. He acted with compassion when he killed an Egyptian who was beating an Israelite, but it was the wrong way to deliver his people.
