The tabernacle had become the center of life for Israel, all throughout the wilderness wanderings and when they crossed into the new land. And God was dwelling at the center of the camp.

The bronze altar was the first thing you would see in the courtyard of the tabernacle. It was the basis of the entire covenant, where the sacrifices were made for the sin of the people.

The last section of Exodus is kind of like “take two” of a film. “Take one,” when the people worshipped the golden calf, was a failure. Now the people are rallied together in unison, and in obedience to the Lord.

Just as the Israelites gave a freewill gift for the construction of the tabernacle, so God wants us to have the right motive when we serve. God wants our hearts.

God had promised to punish the Egyptians for enslaving His people, and to bring the Israelites out with great wealth. So when they made the implements for the tabernacle, it was with gold they had received from the Egyptians.

As God's people walked in obedience to what He had commanded them, they gave a freewill offering, and they began the construction of the Tabernacle.

When Moses came down from the mountain, his face glowed. This brought conviction upon the people because they knew he had been in the presence of God. Real time in God's presence makes a change, and the change is apparent.

God promised to give the land of Canaan to the Israelites, but He warned them not to make a covenant with any of the inhabitants. Also, they were not to intermarry with them — because they would be mixing religions.

When God called Moses back up to Mount Sinai, He was reestablishing the covenant that was in jeopardy because of the sin of the Israelites. He was telling Moses that He accepted his prayer, and He accepted the people.

Moses prayed for God’s guidance and His partnership in the work that was before him. But he also wanted to know God, and he prayed, “Show me Your glory.” And God granted that prayer, in a limited way.

God told the Israelites they were a “stiff-necked people,” and they mourned over it. It was the same people, but their heart toward God had changed.
