Under the Law, Moses was the mediator between God and the people. For us as Christians, Jesus is our mediator. He represents us before the Father, and He is the perfect representation of God for us.

The capital punishment laws in Exodus were instituted not for retribution, but for restitution. On a personal level, we are called to forgive. But on a societal level, there are laws to protect life.

As we study God's Law in Exodus 21, we remember that it serves as a tutor leading us to Christ, and that we cannot have a relationship with the Lord based upon the Law — only upon redemption through Jesus Christ.
