In the Law, God established His familiar pattern of six-and-one. Just as the people were to rest one day each week, they were to cultivate the land for six years and let it lie fallow on the seventh.

The Law of Moses in Exodus has been compared to the earlier Code of Hammurabi. They are similar in some ways, but the Law of Moses is more merciful, and it reveals a God of love who protects the innocent.

God's Law can never make us righteous — that is not its purpose. Instead, it reveals God's standard to us, and it provides a gauge of just how bad we are. And it points us to the Savior.

God’s Law is not only judicial, it’s relational. When people depart from God, they depart from the His Law. It's because people depart from the Lord that they depart from honoring marriage, life, and many other things.

The capital punishment laws in Exodus were instituted not for retribution, but for restitution. On a personal level, we are called to forgive. But on a societal level, there are laws to protect life.

As we study God's Law in Exodus 21, we remember that it serves as a tutor leading us to Christ, and that we cannot have a relationship with the Lord based upon the Law — only upon redemption through Jesus Christ.

For us as Christians, the Ten Commandments are a compass, to help us plot our course; a thermometer, to gauge our love for God, a mirror, to show us ourselves, and a road sign to point us to Jesus Christ.

The first four of the Ten Commandments are vertical; they deal with our relationship with God. The last six are horizontal; they are “man to man,” or “woman to woman,” about how we relate with each other.

The covenant that God made with Israel at Mount Sinai was a conditional one. If they obeyed, He would continue to bless them. The people promised to obey, but they would have to eat their words.
