In the middle of his suffering, Job got an amazing insight. In spite of everything that had happened to him, he had hope. It wasn’t a “self-help” kind of hope. No, Job’s hope was a person.

Job asked the question “If a man dies, will he live again?” Jesus Christ gives the answer when He says, “I am the resurrection and the life.” And He demonstrates that fact by the raising of Lazarus from the dead.

Job lamented that there was no mediator between him and God. But that mediator has stepped forward. He is Jesus Christ, the perfect go-between. He is our representative because He is fully God and fully man.

We usually want to cut the “middle man” out of any transaction. But a mediator is necessary for salvation. Job knew that he needed someone to help him--an intermediary between himself and God.

Job asked the eternal question “How can a man be righteous before God?” The truth is, nobody can! Jesus Christ had to take on our sins, so that we could be credited with His righteousness. That’s the Gospel!

People try to earn God’s favor by being good, by being religious, or by being sincere. But the Bible declares that “There is none righteous; no, not one.” So what’s the answer Job’s question: “How can a man be righteous before God?”

When Job’s friends first came to visit him, they were truly comforting to him. They just sat with him and mourned with him silently. It’s only when they began to give advice and opinions that they added to his suffering.

Job’s wife told him to “curse God and die.” But she was suffering just like her husband--she too had lost everything. Sometimes good people can give bad advice. But we shouldn’t follow it!

In spite of all the pain and suffering in his life, and in spite of his mourning, Job’s first reaction was to worship God. He had enough perspective to say that “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away.”
