Telling the Truth

Stuart and Jill Briscoe

When God Speaks to a Nation

June 17, 2016
Too often, in troubled times, man tries to fix what only God can achieve. That's what happened in Judah - the remaining remnant of Israel - as King Josiah recognized the spiritual descent of the people and implemented societal reforms in an effort to turn people back to God. But can legislated laws ever change people's hearts?

In this message, Stuart Briscoe examines Josiah's well-intended yet superficial attempts to solve deep-rooted heart problems in the hearts of the people of Judah.

Centered on Jeremiah 2:1-6:30, this is the 2nd message in Stuart's series Truth for Troubled Times.

As a follower of Christ, do you feel out of place when people reject Him? Do you shy away from opportunities to share Christ with others? The truth is, we've been intentionally planted to demonstrate and articulate truth to hurting people. So why do many of us freeze up when faced with the opportunity to speak up? In this message, Stuart Briscoe introduces you to Jeremiah - a reluctant, fearful man God used to speak truth into troubled Judah. You'll learn how God desires to use you, too, to boldly live and share Christ with a confused and hurting world. Centered on Jeremiah 1:1-19, this is the 1st message in Stuart's series Truth for Troubled Times.

Life is full of squalls - sudden unannounced and unexpected storms that can lead us to question if God is in control of our lives. Death, sickness, unemployment, broken relationships, fears and failures are some of the troubles Satan uses to swamp us with doubt, usually when we're already stressed and exhausted. How do you respond when you're hit with the squalls of life? Are you like the disciples in Mark 4 who wondered why Jesus slept while their boat was sinking, or do you believe God is in as much control when He's seemingly asleep as when He's obviously awake? Do you pray, "Don't let there be another squall"? Or do you see storms as part of God's plan for your life? Teaching from the Gospel of Mark, Jill Briscoe addresses the issues of suffering and faith, challenging us to examine our beliefs in God in the midst of trouble.

Is it possible to attend church, experience Christianity, and yet remain spiritually dead? And if it is, what might the consequences be for resisting the transforming power of Jesus Christ in you? If you're standing on the edge of faith in Christ, what's keeping you from jumping in to life with Him? In this message, Pete Briscoe unpacks one of the most debated passages of Scripture, Paul's warning to non-believers in the Church. Based on Hebrews 6:4-12, this is the 12th message from the series, Better: A New and Living Way.

How could a perfect God possibly empathize with a sinful person? If you believe your sin is too much for Jesus to forgive, that He is angry at you and separates Himself from you every time you mess up, then you don't know Him. How will Jesus receive you when we have erred, and how should you receive others who sin? In this message, Pete Briscoe details why it's possible for you to stop hiding from Jesus and instead approach Him with confidence and boldness. Based on Hebrews 5:1-10, this is the 10th message from the series, Better: A New and Living Way.

About Stuart and Jill Briscoe

Stuart Briscoe uses wit and intellect to target your heart, capture your attention and challenge you to grow! You will find his logic compelling as he brings a fresh, practical perspective to the Scriptures. Born in England, Stuart left a career in banking to enter the ministry full time. He has written more than 50 books, received three honorary doctorates and preached in more than one hundred countries. He was senior pastor of Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin, for thirty years, and currently serves as minister-at-large.

Jill Briscoe was born in England and found Christ when she was 18 years old. She never looked back. Upon graduating from Cambridge University, she began working as a teacher by day and had a vigorous street ministry to the youths of Liverpool by night.

She met Stuart at a youth conference and they married in 1958. In the 50 years since, Jill has become a highly sought-after Bible teacher and author who travels around the world ministering to under-resourced churches and speaking at international seminars and conferences. Since 2000, she and Stuart, who was formerly senior pastor of Elmbrook Church for 30 years, have had the joy of equipping and encouraging believers across the globe in their roles as ministers-at-large for Elmbrook.

Jill has authored more than 40 books including devotionals, study guides, poetry and children's books. Her vivid, relational teaching style touches the emotions and stirs the heart. She serves as Executive Editor of Just Between Us, a magazine of encouragement for ministry wives and women in leadership, and served on the board of World Relief and Christianity Today, Inc., for over 20 years.

Jill and Stuart call suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin their home. When they are not traveling, they spend time with their three children, David, Judy and Peter, and thirteen grandchildren.
