What Are You Eating?

March 23, 2017

You know that feeling after you’ve stuffed yourself with junk food? The idea of junk food might seem attractive at first, but you quickly realize how bad it makes you feel. Spiritual “junk food” can have the same effect. You can spend hours consumed with things that are only robbing you of joy and energy.

In this message, Pete Briscoe shares how God has a feast of good food prepared for you—food that will transform and nourish your soul—and where to find it. If you’re willing to leave the junk food behind there’s joy, peace, and personal spiritual growth waiting for you.

Go to college, get a good job, buy a car—maybe two—and a house, get married, and achieve great success. Sound familiar? It’s called the American Dream, and many of us have grown up believing that achieving it is the ultimate goal in life.  In reality, the American Dream is nothing but a list of cravings with an empty promise that says, “If you get everything, you’ll be happy.” It’s a futile attempt to find life in lifestyle.  So what’s the alternative? In this message, Pete Briscoe takes us to John 3:1-16 and shares how to stop chasing things that will never satisfy and trade in the American Dream for the real “good Life.”

Having addressed aspects of the private life - praying, fasting and giving - Jesus taught about the public life of a disciple - practical matters like finances, fitness, fashion, future - and showed how they require careful thought, sound decisions, and clear priorities.

As the disciples became more familiar with Jesus, they could not help noticing how important prayer was in His life. So it is no surprise that they eventually asked him to teach them to pray. We all need to learn how to pray because it does not come naturally.

Having embarked on his ministry by proclaiming the arrival of the Kingdom, Jesus began to teach in "The Sermon on the Mount" what it means to belong to the kingdom, how to behave as kingdom people, and the blessedness of kingdom life.

After John's murder, Jesus moved to Galilee where "the people (were) living in darkness." He began to announce the long-promised Kingdom and started to form a nucleus of disciples who would commit to him and carry on his mission - to this day!

The ministries of Jesus and John the Baptist started out in similar fashion - both preached, "The kingdom of heaven (God) is near" - a message the disciples themselves would later be sent out to proclaim. We need to be thoroughly familiar with this message, too.

Disciples relate to their teachers and masters. The better they know the master, the deeper will be their discipleship. This was true 2,000 years ago – it's still true today.

If someone were to ask you today what your purpose in life is, would you be able to confidently answer? Finding your life’s purpose can be challenging. As Christians, we know our primary calling is to follow Jesus, but how are we supposed to be practically spending our days? In this message, Jill Briscoe reminds you that God has a specific plan for your life—and it’s never too late to figure out what it is. About Stuart and Jill Briscoe

Stuart Briscoe uses wit and intellect to target your heart, capture your attention and challenge you to grow! You will find his logic compelling as he brings a fresh, practical perspective to the Scriptures. Born in England, Stuart left a career in banking to enter the ministry full time. He has written more than 50 books, received three honorary doctorates and preached in more than one hundred countries. He was senior pastor of Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin, for thirty years, and currently serves as minister-at-large.

Jill Briscoe was born in England and found Christ when she was 18 years old. She never looked back. Upon graduating from Cambridge University, she began working as a teacher by day and had a vigorous street ministry to the youths of Liverpool by night.

She met Stuart at a youth conference and they married in 1958. In the 50 years since, Jill has become a highly sought-after Bible teacher and author who travels around the world ministering to under-resourced churches and speaking at international seminars and conferences. Since 2000, she and Stuart, who was formerly senior pastor of Elmbrook Church for 30 years, have had the joy of equipping and encouraging believers across the globe in their roles as ministers-at-large for Elmbrook.

Jill has authored more than 40 books including devotionals, study guides, poetry and children's books. Her vivid, relational teaching style touches the emotions and stirs the heart. She serves as Executive Editor of Just Between Us, a magazine of encouragement for ministry wives and women in leadership, and served on the board of World Relief and Christianity Today, Inc., for over 20 years.

Jill and Stuart call suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin their home. When they are not traveling, they spend time with their three children, David, Judy and Peter, and thirteen grandchildren.
