Stuart and Jill Briscoe

The Sword and Prayer - Part 2

October 22, 2015
When you think of soldiers on a battlefield, you don't often think of those soldiers on their knees in prayer. But that is exactly how spiritual battles are fought - and won! God has given us two incredible weapons: the Bible and prayer. When we live in the Holy Spirit, he uses these weapons in powerful ways in our lives, teaching us new things, bringing to mind what we may have forgotten, and leading us where He wants us to go.

Based on Ephesians 6:17-20, this is the 7th and final message in Pete Briscoe's series on spiritual warfare titled Disarming the Darkness.

Wearing a helmet instills confidence in the wearer. We know that our heads are protected and there is a lesser chance of injury. So why does Paul use the image of a helmet when he talks about salvation? How does the "helmet of salvation" protect us and give us confidence? And how can we be sure that we don't lose our salvation when we sin? Based on Ephesians 6:17, this is the 6th message in Pete Briscoe's series on spiritual warfare titled Disarming the Darkness.

We exercise faith every day - from the chair we sit in to the car we drive. We put our faith and trust in many things. So why is it so hard for us to put our trust in Jesus, the only one who is completely trustworthy? Why do we put our faith in works-based salvation, human tradition, or other "hollow and deceptive philosophies" instead of Jesus, who freely gives us the gift of salvation by grace through faith? When we put our faith in Jesus, He is our shield and protector from Satan's deception. When Jesus is our shield, we don't need to worry because we have everything we need. Based on Ephesians 6:16, this is the 5th message in Pete Briscoe's series on spiritual warfare titled Disarming the Darkness.

If you were asked what the "gospel" or "good news" is, what would you say? In Ephesians 6, Paul tells us to "stand firm in the gospel." But what exactly is the gospel? Many of us might say the gospel is that Jesus died for our sins. While the cross is part of it, the whole gospel is so much more! And if we want to "stand firm" in the gospel, we need to understand what it is, so that we can stand firm against Satan's assault of lies. Based on Ephesians 6:15, this is the 4th message in Pete Briscoe's series on spiritual warfare titled Disarming the Darkness.

All of humanity has a problem: unrighteousness. Ever since Adam and Eve realized their unrighteousness and used fig leaves to try to cover up their nakedness, we've been trying to make our own fig-leaf coverings. However, when we put our faith in Christ, He removes our filthy rags of unrighteousness and clothes us in His righteousness. So why do we still see ourselves as unrighteous, and how can we "stand firm with the breastplate of righteousness in place"? Based on Ephesians 6:14, this is the 3rd message in Pete Briscoe's series on spiritual warfare titled Disarming the Darkness.

I deserve better than this. I don't have enough. No one will ever know. Ever had these kinds of thoughts? These are all examples of the lies Satan tells us. We've learned that Satan is a defeated foe, powerless to harm those who are in Christ, but he is active in trying to deceive us, getting us to believe these kinds of lies. How are we to protect ourselves against the subtle deceptions of the deceiver? Based on Ephesians 6:14, this is the 2nd message in Pete Briscoe's series on spiritual warfare titled Disarming the Darkness.

Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes." (Eph. 6:11) Ever feel like you've been under attack? Like Satan and his demons are unrelenting in their assault on your life? It can feel overwhelming and disheartening, and we can easily lose hope. But if we are in Christ, we have an "unconventional" weapon in our arsenal - the name of Jesus! And we must remember that because of Jesus' work on the cross Satan is a powerless, defeated foe! Based on Ephesians 6:10-13, this is the 1st message in Pete Briscoe's series on spiritual warfare titled Disarming the Darkness.

On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about." After Jesus' ascension into heaven, the believers were filled with fear, wondering if they would be next to be crucified. But something happened that energized these people, gave them power to speak and do things as they never could have before! Based on Acts 1:4, this is the final message in Jill Briscoe's 8-message series, The Heartbeat of the Master.
