Stuart and Jill Briscoe

The Long Walk Home - Part 1

January 13, 2016
The Word of God tells us that there are two life roads - one leads to eternal life, the other to eternal death. There is an art to staying on the right road. There will be pitfalls and enemies who seek to trip us up and distract, divert, and destroy us along the way. But the Holy Spirit will guide, direct, and empower us to keep on walking in the everlasting way!

This message by Jill Briscoe is based on Psalm 119:9-15 and is the 3rd message in Jill and Stuart's Bible study series titled Living in the Word.

What does it mean to live in the Word? How do you hear His voice and apply it to your daily life? It starts with bringing your heart, your mind, and your will when you sit down and spend time reading His Word. Psalm 119:18 says, "Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law." This message by Jill Briscoe is centered on Psalm 119 and is the 2nd message in Jill and Stuart's Bible study series titled Living in the Word.

An idol is a person or thing that is greatly admired, loved, or revered. Often, our idols aren't as obvious as worshiping a carved image of a goddess. They are less conspicuous, like compulsive shopping, abusing alcohol, or emotional eating. Or it might be binging on hours of our favorite television show or holding someone in too high regard. As Christians, an idol is looking to anything other than Jesus to meet our every physical, emotional, and spiritual need. In this message, Pete Briscoe talks openly about letting go and breaking free from our dependence on the idols we keep hidden in our hearts and discovering true contentment that never fades. Based on Isaiah 44:12-22 and Jonah 2, this is the 2nd message in Pete's 2-message series Finding Contentment.

We all like "stuff" - the new, the fancy, the expensive, and the flashy. And many of us believe that life is better when we have more possessions. In fact, there are pastors who have falsely taught that if we please God, He'll bless us with material wealth. But the short-lived excitement we feel with each purchase is fleeting. And soon we're looking for the next purchase to ignite those feelings again. In this message, Pete Briscoe talks about our excess stuff that only gets in the way of our finding true and long-lasting contentment in our lives. And he provides an antidote to our over-buying that will glorify God. Based on Luke 3:10-14, this is the 1st message in Pete's 2-message series Finding Contentment.

But too often our happiness is dependent upon our happenings, and when things go wrong and curveballs come our way, happiness is gone. So given the uncertainty of the times in which we live, how do we gird ourselves up for the inevitable disappointments we will face? How do we put ourselves together to live well in the midst of uncertain times? Learn how as Stuart Briscoe takes us to 1 Peter for a new perspective on joy - found through the work of the Spirit in and through us.

Sometimes we think that if we could only get what we want, we would finally be happy. Solomon thought that, too. He had a "getting" obsession, never denying himself anything he wanted, and he became "greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem before [him]." But all these things didn't bring Solomon the happiness he was looking for. Solomon and you and I are all trying to soothe a heart ache that can't be cured by "things" but only by finding our purpose, the reason we were made! Based on Ecclesiastes 2, this is the second message in Jill's 2-message series, Heart Hunger.

About Stuart and Jill Briscoe

Stuart Briscoe uses wit and intellect to target your heart, capture your attention and challenge you to grow! You will find his logic compelling as he brings a fresh, practical perspective to the Scriptures. Born in England, Stuart left a career in banking to enter the ministry full time. He has written more than 50 books, received three honorary doctorates and preached in more than one hundred countries. He was senior pastor of Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin, for thirty years, and currently serves as minister-at-large.

Jill Briscoe was born in England and found Christ when she was 18 years old. She never looked back. Upon graduating from Cambridge University, she began working as a teacher by day and had a vigorous street ministry to the youths of Liverpool by night.

She met Stuart at a youth conference and they married in 1958. In the 50 years since, Jill has become a highly sought-after Bible teacher and author who travels around the world ministering to under-resourced churches and speaking at international seminars and conferences. Since 2000, she and Stuart, who was formerly senior pastor of Elmbrook Church for 30 years, have had the joy of equipping and encouraging believers across the globe in their roles as ministers-at-large for Elmbrook.

Jill has authored more than 40 books including devotionals, study guides, poetry and children's books. Her vivid, relational teaching style touches the emotions and stirs the heart. She serves as Executive Editor of Just Between Us, a magazine of encouragement for ministry wives and women in leadership, and served on the board of World Relief and Christianity Today, Inc., for over 20 years.

Jill and Stuart call suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin their home. When they are not traveling, they spend time with their three children, David, Judy and Peter, and thirteen grandchildren.
