Stuart and Jill Briscoe

The Hidden Life

January 20, 2015
When we think of the "heroes of the faith," we tend to focus on the tasks they accomplished and the people they encouraged - but the things they accomplished on their feet wouldn't have happened if they hadn't spent time on their knees in prayer. Even Elijah had to start somewhere! He was a shepherd in a small town who cultivated "the hidden life" of prayer before God called him to change his world.

In this message, Jill walks us through Elijah's story, before the majestic displays of God's glory on Mount Carmel, to a life fueled by prayer and trust in the Lord. Based on 1 Kings 17 and James 5, this is the 2nd message in Jill's 8-message series, Prayer That Works.

How's your prayer life? Are your prayers childish, easily distracted, unfocused and lacking in passion, seeing prayer as a way to get what you want? Or are they heartfelt, fervent, and effective... prayer that works? Drawing from the prophet Elijah's fervent prayer life and his prayers for rain in a drought, Jill guides us in becoming great "pray-ers" and encourages us that effective prayer takes time and work but is completely worthwhile. Based on James 5:13-19, this is the 1st message in Jill's 8-message series, Prayer That Works.

Are you a messy person? The truth is we are all messy people living in a messy world. Sometimes we attempt to camouflage the clutter of our lives instead of dealing with it. Ever wonder what Jesus might think of our messy lives? Thankfully, He sees beyond our junk and isn't concerned about us transforming into tidy people. He came to do so much more - to give us life and life to the full! With teaching from Luke 5:27-39, this is the 7th message in Pete Briscoe's series, What Will Jesus Do?

When was the last time you stole away to a quiet, secluded place to pray? Chances are it's been a while. But quiet time is essential for any thriving relationship. Jesus craved alone time with the Father, so He often withdrew from the crowds and disciples to spend time in prayer. How will your relationship with God thrive if you answer Jesus' prompting to steal away with Him? With teaching from Luke 5:12-16, this is the 6th message in Pete Briscoe's series What Will Jesus Do?

We have a primary calling in life to be a child of God, but we all have a secondary calling as well. This secondary calling is a personal one to be an instrument in God's work. But how do we know what that personal calling is? It takes an invitation. In this message, Pete shares an unexpected way the invitation may arrive. With teaching from Luke 5:1-11, this is the 5th message in Pete Briscoe's series What Will Jesus Do?

There are certain things worth dropping everything for. This was true in the life of Jesus, and it's true in our lives, too. Jesus recognized many things as important, but He also knew what was most important. If Christ is dwelling within us, then His priorities will be our priorities. Pete shares where Jesus placed His focus, and where we should, too. Based on Luke 4:38-44, this is the 4th message in Pete Briscoe's series, What Will Jesus Do?

The forces of evil are real, and they can petrify us. But a simple truth can give us hope: In the presence of a greater strength, bullies become wimps. In the presence of Jesus, demons become weak at the knees. Only in the power of Jesus, then, do we have strength and authority to face the enemy. Based on Luke 4:31-37, this is the 3rd message in Pete Briscoe's series, What Will Jesus Do?
