The Forgiveness of God, Part 1

September 8, 2016
God came in Christ to offer us forgiveness through the cross. He rose again the third day and set about bringing the world back home. "Talk to me," says the Father. "Prayer is the means; I have made a way." But there is a problem - we don't know how.

Luke 11:1 & Matthew 6:9-14

A bewildered human race is like a man lost in a forest asking, "Father, are you there?" In 1945, at the end of World War II, Helmut Thielicke, a brilliant theologian, preaching through the Lord's Prayer to what was left of his congregation in the ruins of his church in Stuttgart said, "Everything will be all right so long as we hear His good voice calling to us above the howling of the wolves, above the sound of branches snapping, above the ominous noises around us. God is always there." A Christian worldview believes in the Fatherhood of God. Luke 11:1-5

In the midst of so much international and interpersonal turmoil, it is easy to wonder: Why is it like this? What is God doing? How can I possibly carry on in this chaotic world? These questions, incredibly pertinent today, were also asked by the psalmist of Israel several thousand years ago. In his message "Keep Calm and Carry On," Stuart Briscoe remembers life in World War II era Britain, and he uses Psalm 2 to confront the fear caused by the distressing circumstances of our current world with the sovereign plan of our mighty and holy God.

Have you tried to carry all of your groceries into the house in one trip so you didn't have to go back out to the car? Your arms are aching, the bags are pinching your fingers, and the food is beginning to slide out. But you keep moving, hoping to get everything into the kitchen before the bags break! Now imagine that someone in your family came out as you were unloading your bags and offered to carry them so you could sit down to rest. You probably wouldn't turn them down! Well, Jesus has made this offer - He wants to carry our burdens. We just need to say yes. In Matthew 11:28-29, Jesus says: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. This is the 2nd message in Jill's 2-CD series, "A View from the Porch Swing."

One of the best known passages in the Bible is Psalm 23. It describes the relationship between a shepherd and His flock, in which He guides them through pastures, hills and dark valleys. In every case, the sheep are content because the shepherd is there, offering protection and comfort. We are the sheep in this story! Jill teaches that no matter what is happening in our lives, good or bad, the only way we can find true contentment - and even joy - in every situation is by trusting in the Lord, our shepherd, who promises to never leave us. This is the 1st message in Jill's 2-CD series "A View from the Porch Swing."

The Declaration of Independence states that "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" are divinely imparted inalienable rights. But an honest appraisal of modern life shows that for most people happiness is fleeting, and for many it may already have fled. Is this the best we can expect? Nehemiah 8:1-10

An idol is a person or thing that is greatly admired, loved, or revered. Often, our idols aren't as obvious as worshiping a carved image of a goddess. They are less conspicuous, like compulsive shopping, abusing alcohol, or emotional eating. Or it might be binging on hours of our favorite television show or holding someone in too high regard. As Christians, an idol is looking to anything other than Jesus to meet our every physical, emotional, and spiritual need. In this message, Pete Briscoe talks openly about letting go and breaking free from our dependence on the idols we keep hidden in our hearts and discovering true contentment that never fades. Based on Isaiah 44:12-22 and Jonah 2, this is the 2nd message in Pete's 2-message series Finding Contentment.
