Stuart and Jill Briscoe

Silencing the Critics

June 30, 2014
Sometimes when trying to assume a leadership role, criticism and opposition occur. And often, just when you think that you have overcome the opposition, it sneaks right back up on you. So how does someone take the personal attacks from the opposition and still be an effective leader?

In this message, Pete Briscoe discusses four specific ways we can be attacked and four ways to overcome it. Based on Nehemiah 6, this is the 5th message in Pete's 9-message series After I Say "Yes, Lord."

We tend to treat people commensurate with their social standing, don't we? If we perceive someone to be below us in social standing, we treat them differently than the people we perceive to be above us. It stinks, but it's the way we often do it. Even as believers, when we function in the flesh, we think of people according to the "pecking order" and treat them differently. This is not kingdom thinking. In this message, Pete Briscoe looks at Nehemiah 5 and discusses four ways we can treat people in order to glorify God. This is the 4th message in Pete's 9-message series After I Say "Yes, Lord."

In many situations, criticism and opposition are inevitable. This is especially true when we try to do God's work. Even within the church, people will find fault with just about anything — the length of the sermon, the style of the music, the Sunday school format, or even the color of the bulletin. In this message, Pete Briscoe uses Nehemiah's actions as examples of two things we can do with criticism. Based on Nehemiah 4, this is the 3rd message in Pete's 9-message series After I Say "Yes, Lord."

Most of us have experienced starting a new job and being trained on how to complete the new duties. Without this training, it would be a lot harder to figure out what we needed to do every day. The same is true when we serve the Lord. It's easier for us to serve when we know how to do it. In this message, Pete Briscoe looks into Nehemiah 3 and studies the gates of Jerusalem to give us six training lessons about how we can serve God better. This is the 2nd message in Pete's 9-message series After I Say "Yes, Lord."

God can choose the most unlikely people to carry out His plan. Moses stuttered, so God sent Him to talk to Pharaoh. Paul was a Jew, so God sent him to the Gentiles. Often times we do one thing because we think that's what God wants from us, but then He calls us into something totally different and unique. Some of us know just where God wants us to be, and some of us haven't quite figured it out yet. In this message, Pete Briscoe looks at Nehemiah 1 and discusses six things about Nehemiah's sending that will help you discover yours. This is the 1st message in Pete's 9-message series After I Say "Yes, Lord."

Life is full of squalls - sudden unannounced and unexpected storms that can lead us to question if God is in control of our lives. Death, sickness, unemployment, broken relationships, fears and failures are some of the troubles Satan uses to swamp us with doubt, usually when we're already stressed and exhausted. How do you respond when you're hit with the squalls of life? Are you like the disciples in Mark 4 who wondered why Jesus slept while their boat was sinking, or do you believe God is in as much control when He's seemingly asleep as when He's obviously awake? Do you pray, "Don't let there be another squall"? Or do you see storms as part of God's plan for your life? Teaching from the Gospel of Mark, Jill Briscoe addresses the issues of suffering and faith, challenging us to examine our beliefs in God in the midst of trouble.

The letter to the Hebrews, as is common with New Testament epistles, having dealt with many deep theological issues, is brought to a conclusion with many essential, practical instructions. A healthy reminder that faith is not just a matter of belief - it involves behavior, too. Based on Hebrews 12:14-29, this is the final message in Stuart Briscoe's series Keep the Faith.

The contemporary debate on discipline has led to a dramatic decrease in child abuse and an equally dramatic increase in ill-disciplined children and many attendant social ills. But we must understand the significant role discipline plays in spiritual experience. Based on Hebrews 12:4-13, this is the 7th message in Stuart Briscoe's series Keep the Faith.

Various metaphors have been used to describe the Christian life. Some see it as a war to be fought, others as a party to be enjoyed, others as a task to be completed, and still others as a race to be run. The writer of Hebrews chooses the race metaphor. Based on Hebrews 12:1-3, this is the 6th message in Stuart Briscoe's series Keep the Faith.
