Less Is Better, Part 1 of 2

August 22, 2016
We all like "stuff" - the new, the fancy, the expensive, and the flashy. And many of us believe that life is better when we have more possessions. In fact, there are pastors who have falsely taught that if we please God, He'll bless us with material wealth. But the short-lived excitement we feel with each purchase is fleeting. And soon we're looking for the next purchase to ignite those feelings again.

In this message, Pete Briscoe talks about our excess stuff that only gets in the way of our finding true and long-lasting contentment in our lives. And he provides an antidote to our over-buying that will glorify God.

Based on Luke 3:10-14, this is the 1st message in Pete's 2-message series Finding Contentment.

Have you lost your joy? It can be hard when life is swirling around you and beating you down, but true joy is found in praising God for who He is and what He's doing, even when you can't see it. "To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?" says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Isaiah 40:25-26 Isaiah 40 and Psalm 137

When faced with a crisis do you find yourself prepared knowing where to turn, or do you panic and simply react? As Jesus faced the reality of the cross, He instinctively turned to His Father in prayer. Is prayer your first line of defense in a crisis? In this teaching, Stuart Briscoe looks to Jesus' example to teach us about the comfort available to us through prayer. Based on John 17:1-19, this is the 7th message in Stuart's series Comfort for Troubled Hearts.

Dealing with grief and loss is something most people go through sometime in their lives. Trying to get through difficult situations on our own can leave us feeling hopeless and alone. The apostle Paul said, "We sorrow, but we do not sorrow as those who have no hope." But is it possible for us to experience hope in the midst of grief? In this message, Stuart Briscoe helps us to discover abundant life in all situations. Finding comfort during times of sorrow is possible when we know where to look. Based on John 16:16-33, this is the 6th message in Stuart's series Comfort for Troubled Hearts.

We know from personal experience that if something can go wrong, it will - and probably at the worst possible time. We navigate through all sorts of trials, but what if the trouble you face is because you're a Christian? Jesus tells us not to be surprised when we face troubles, because the world around us loves the darkness rather than the light. He also tells us to step out of our comfort zone, thoroughly convinced of who He is, ready to respond differently than the world. In this message, Stuart Briscoe unpacks John 15 to show us how this kind of response is possible and how to find comfort through trials. Based on John 15:17-16:4, this is the 4th message in Stuart's series Comfort for Troubled Hearts.

Are you in a dead-end relationship? Disappointed because that "special person" doesn't meet all of your needs? We hear about situations like these all the time. It's clear we're created as relational beings, so why do we struggle so much with relationships? In this message Stuart Briscoe teaches about the ultimate relationship that brings both comfort and meaning to our lives. Based on John 15:1-16, this is the 3rd message in Stuart's series Comfort for Troubled Hearts.

It is a well known fact that human beings have a great need to experience and express love. Failure in either of these areas can lead to profound problems. Jesus taught His troubled disciples about the comfort that comes from loving and being loved. Based on John 14:15-31, this is the 2nd message in Stuart Briscoe's series Comfort for Troubled Hearts.

Jesus, knowing what lay ahead of Him, spent the waning hours of his life with His disciples. It was a difficult time for them and they became deeply troubled. Jesus' response was to tell them, "Trust God, trust Me, don't let your hearts be troubled." Easier said than done, but still the way for troubled hearts to find comfort. Based on John 14:1-14, this is the 1st message in Stuart Briscoe's series Comfort for Troubled Hearts.

Do you find yourself continually dissatisfied or longing for more? God's creation was intended for our delight, never to satisfy our desire. Pete quotes Bruce Johnson, as well as various scriptures, as he explains that God alone is enough for us - He's the only true satisfaction. This is the final message in Pete's 9-message series "I'm Not Who You Think I Am."

Have you gotten upset with God for not answering your prayers? If God really cares about me, why doesn't He swoop down and rescue me from my situation? Pete takes us into Lamentations 1 where Jeremiah feels tortured by his life circumstances but chooses to set his mind on the goodness of the Lord. Find out why God is trustworthy through allowing us to suffer. This is the 4th message in Pete's 9-message series "I'm Not Who You Think I Am." Lamentations 1-3
