Jehovah Jireh - The Lord Will Provide

May 31, 2011
In Genesis, God asked Abraham to go to Mount Moriah to sacrifice his son, Isaac. Abraham obeyed God and took Isaac up the mountain. On the way, Isaac kept asking his father what they would be sacrificing. When it became clear what was happening, Isaac obeyed his father - even though he was probably very frightened. Are you like Isaac, willing to be a sacrifice for God? In this message, Jill helps us understand God as our Jehovah-Jireh, our provider, so we can learn to be committed to God's plan.

This is the 3rd message in Jill's 8-message series "The Names of God."

In Bible times, every seven years slaves had the chance to go free. If they chose to stay with their masters, they would be taken to the public market and a peg was put through one of the slave's ears. That way he would be "marked" as a slave who loved his master and did not want to go free. Do you consider yourself "marked" for God?

In a conversation with a Samaritan woman in which they discussed worship, Jesus told her that the Father was seeking "true worshipers (who) will worship the Father in spirit and in truth" (John 4:23). We need to understand clearly what the Father is looking for.

These concluding practical teachings of the Epistle to the Romans are based on an exhortation to "offer our bodies as living sacrifices." Whatever this means, we can be sure that it results in a lifestyle that is "pleasing to God." Making God smile is reason enough to explore it!

We have seen that an attitude of trusting obedience towards the Lord and careful attention to our personal behavior are vital if we are to please God. In this passage we will see that proper attitudes toward other people merit the smile of His approval, too.

Pleasing ourselves is instinctual. Pleasing God does not come naturally. Therefore, we need to learn how to do it. In fact, we need to be convinced that we should do it. That is why Paul "instructed" the Thessalonians, carefully using a word with military connotations.

This Scripture talks about "those who live according to the sinful nature" and those "who live in accordance with the Spirit." The former, we are told, cannot please God. If we wish to please God, we must give careful attention to what this means.

Enoch may not be a household name, but in his day, he had a great reputation. He was known as a man who pleased God. He made God smile because he "walked with God" in a loving, trusting relatiohship. Enoch knew "without faith it is impossible to please God."
