It’s Worth the Awkwardness

March 30, 2017

Do you get uncomfortable in small gatherings? As believers, we’re encouraged to join a small group, but they can be intimidating and downright awkward at first. Sometimes it's just easier to come and go from church, but when you do that, you never really connect with anyone, and you remain isolated.

Jesus knew the importance of small, intimate groups of believers. In fact, one of the first things He did in ministry was gather His disciples—a group that remained His “circle” for the entirety of His earthly ministry.

In this message based on John 13-17, Pete Briscoe tells the story of the very first circle of believers and shares how being in a tight-knit group is worth the initial discomfort of joining one. There’s a richness found in small groups that can be experienced nowhere else.

Some things are better together—sweet and sour, Lewis and Clark, or Batman and Robin. When you separate one from the other, they’re not nearly as powerful. Both are needed in order to achieve the greatest impact. It’s the same thing when it comes to our faith. Spending time in God’s Word personally while being part of a broader church community are important aspects to growing spiritually. However, there’s an equally important component to our growth we can often overlook. In this message based on Ephesians 4:11-16 and Acts 2:42-47, Pete Briscoe shares what that crucial component is. When you step into it, and when it’s paired with personal and corporate times of worship and learning, it becomes a powerful means to spiritual growth.

In subtle ways, the world often encourages us to go it alone. We are taught to be independent from a young age, and the busyness of life can often leave little margin for genuine relationships. Sometimes rejection and other past wounds—and maybe even sin—keeps us from being part of an authentic community. However, isolation is not what God has in mind for us. He designed us for interdependence, both for our benefit and the benefit of others. Living without community puts us in a dangerous and vulnerable position for Satan’s attacks. In this message based on 1 Corinthians 12:11-31, Pete Briscoe teaches about the importance of living life together and shares how a huge slice of the good Life is waiting for you within an authentic, loving, Christ-centered community.

Who doesn’t love being pampered with gifts and services by others? We all love it when things are given to us or when we can afford to treat ourselves. It’s part of the American Dream, and the Bible even tells us the created order was given to us to delight in. But is there something even better than receiving, even better than accumulating more? Scripture presents an alternative to receiving that not only increases our contentment level, but is far more life-giving. And it’s one of the best kept secrets that can actually change your life. In this message, Pete Briscoe takes you to Acts 20:28-35 and Philippians 2:1-7 to share what that secret is and how you can step into this incredible aspect of the Christian life.

You know that feeling after you’ve stuffed yourself with junk food? The idea of junk food might seem attractive at first, but you quickly realize how bad it makes you feel. Spiritual “junk food” can have the same effect. You can spend hours consumed with things that are only robbing you of joy and energy. In this message, Pete Briscoe shares how God has a feast of good food prepared for you—food that will transform and nourish your soul—and where to find it. If you’re willing to leave the junk food behind there’s joy, peace, and personal spiritual growth waiting for you.

Go to college, get a good job, buy a car—maybe two—and a house, get married, and achieve great success. Sound familiar? It’s called the American Dream, and many of us have grown up believing that achieving it is the ultimate goal in life.  In reality, the American Dream is nothing but a list of cravings with an empty promise that says, “If you get everything, you’ll be happy.” It’s a futile attempt to find life in lifestyle.  So what’s the alternative? In this message, Pete Briscoe takes us to John 3:1-16 and shares how to stop chasing things that will never satisfy and trade in the American Dream for the real “good Life.”

Having addressed aspects of the private life - praying, fasting and giving - Jesus taught about the public life of a disciple - practical matters like finances, fitness, fashion, future - and showed how they require careful thought, sound decisions, and clear priorities.

As the disciples became more familiar with Jesus, they could not help noticing how important prayer was in His life. So it is no surprise that they eventually asked him to teach them to pray. We all need to learn how to pray because it does not come naturally.
