How Should I Handle Temptation? Part 2

July 20, 2017

How do you handle temptation? Do you just give in, shrug your shoulders, and say it's just the way you are? Do you give in and blame Satan? Or do you rely on God and in His power resist the temptation? Every temptation that comes our way is an opportunity to go wrong, but it is also an opportunity to do right, and Scripture tells us that God will never allow us to be tempted beyond what we can bear. In this message, Stuart Briscoe helps us understand what temptation is and where it comes from, and he encourages us to find opportunities to do right when we’re tempted to go wrong.

Giant Temptation comes to all of us. All of us know him. He knows us—he knows when our guard is up, and he knows when we’re feeling lazy. It’s in our times of laziness that we’re faced with temptations that we’re not prepared for, and we, like David, have to choose whether to go along with the giant of temptation or to get off the rooftop. Have you experienced a time when you've failed to overcome a temptation? Jill Briscoe shows us that the value of David's life story is not only that it shows man's great sin, but that it shows God's even greater forgiveness and grace.

Trials and temptations are the inevitable lot of fallen people who live in a fallen world. God does not send them, but He does permit them. Provided we handle them correctly, they serve to help us mature. But when mishandled, they can lead to great harm. The Children of Israel were a great example of this.

As Christians, we know the Gospel message by heart, but when it comes to sharing it with others, we panic. We avoid sharing it because we tell ourselves we're not gifted or articulate enough. The truth is if we're in Christ, we are His ambassadors sent to share the good news with everyone. Will you accept your identity as a carrier of the world's greatest message?

How would you describe your relationship to the church? Are you engaged in the church, or have you distanced yourself and feel disconnected? For various reasons, it's sometimes easy for us to drift away from the church and isolate ourselves. But God's desire is to build a vibrant, interconnected, and beautiful church—and He wants you to be a part of it!

Suffering is inevitable, but when it comes, do you protest and ask, "How could God let this happen to me?" What if, instead of protesting, we embraced suffering? The concept is countercultural, but a powerful thing happens when we embrace suffering—Christ is revealed through us. How will Christ express Himself as you resist the desire to run from suffering and embrace your difficult circumstance?

About Stuart and Jill Briscoe

Stuart Briscoe uses wit and intellect to target your heart, capture your attention and challenge you to grow! You will find his logic compelling as he brings a fresh, practical perspective to the Scriptures. Born in England, Stuart left a career in banking to enter the ministry full time. He has written more than 50 books, received three honorary doctorates and preached in more than one hundred countries. He was senior pastor of Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin, for thirty years, and currently serves as minister-at-large.

Jill Briscoe was born in England and found Christ when she was 18 years old. She never looked back. Upon graduating from Cambridge University, she began working as a teacher by day and had a vigorous street ministry to the youths of Liverpool by night.

She met Stuart at a youth conference and they married in 1958. In the 50 years since, Jill has become a highly sought-after Bible teacher and author who travels around the world ministering to under-resourced churches and speaking at international seminars and conferences. Since 2000, she and Stuart, who was formerly senior pastor of Elmbrook Church for 30 years, have had the joy of equipping and encouraging believers across the globe in their roles as ministers-at-large for Elmbrook.

Jill has authored more than 40 books including devotionals, study guides, poetry and children's books. Her vivid, relational teaching style touches the emotions and stirs the heart. She serves as Executive Editor of Just Between Us, a magazine of encouragement for ministry wives and women in leadership, and served on the board of World Relief and Christianity Today, Inc., for over 20 years.

Jill and Stuart call suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin their home. When they are not traveling, they spend time with their three children, David, Judy and Peter, and thirteen grandchildren.
