Good Works

March 26, 2015
Ever do something nice for someone only to have it blow up in your face? Serve in a ministry only to end up tired and burnt out? Give to the church but never see it come back to you? Aren't "good works" supposed to be good? It could be that your motivation is in the wrong place. The apostle Paul tells us in the book of Galatians that good works done in the flesh will bring death and destruction, but good works done in the Holy Spirit at the Spirit's prompting bring life!

In this message from Galatians 6:1-10, Pete teaches us about good works and where they come from, and he encourages us to let ourselves be led by the Spirit. This is the 22nd message in Pete's 23-message series, Dance Lessons.

We all have a choice: independence or dependence. We can choose independence, our own way, following our flesh and consequently experiencing hatred, envy, discord, fits of rage, selfish actions. Or we can choose dependence on the Holy Spirit, walking with the Spirit and allowing Him to lead us where He wants us, allowing us to experience love, joy, peace, patience. In this message from Galatians 5:13-21, Pete walks us through the two choices before each of us and encourages us to find Life by surrendering to the Holy Spirit. This is the 21st message in Pete's 23-message series, Dance Lessons.

Sometimes, those "do's and don'ts" of Christianity can be overwhelming when you're marching. After all, there were 613 commandments to keep in the Old Testament law! When you start thinking you have to earn your salvation, it's easy to get overwhelmed by all the rules. But what if there is a simpler way? Living in the grace of God and enjoying the "dance" comes down to one thing, one thing to focus all your attention and take away the feeling of being overwhelmed. When this one thing is our focus, we keep our eyes on Jesus and allow the dancing and the details to fall into place. In this message from Galatians 5:1-12, Pete looks at faith without all the rules and gives us that "one thing" on which we can focus. This is the 20th message in Pete's 23-message series, Dance Lessons.

Have you lost your joy? Feel like you’re "faking it" in your Christian life, just going through the motions? The church in Galatia did. They became so focused on following the law and keeping certain rituals that they lost sight of Jesus in their lives. In his letter to that church, the apostle Paul provided them with a striking visual picture - when Christ is in you, it should be like a pregnancy, the more Christ in you, the more HE shows in your life and is reflected in your actions! In this message from Galatians 3-4, Pete walks us through Paul's visual and encourages us to let Christ show in our lives! This is the 19th message in Pete's 23-message series, Dance Lessons.

Have you ever felt the negative effects of favoritism? Been passed over for a promotion because you're a woman, a different ethnicity, from a different socioeconomic background? We've probably all felt the effects of favoritism in some form, whether racism, elitism, or sexism (feminism or chauvinism). But the Bible is clear: each and every one of us who is in Christ is God's favorite! In this message, Pete walks us through Jesus' response to the sexism of the ancient Roman world, and he encourages us to remember that all of us are God's favorite. Teaching from Galatians 3:26-28, this is the 18th message in Pete's 23-message series, Dance Lessons.

Most of us, though we have been given a new primary identity with Christ in our salvation, still live in our original identities. We live as merely human, instead of as a powerful, Spirit-indwelt child of God. Learning to dance with the Spirit is learning to live out the new identity, your primary identity, given in Christ. Based on Galatians 3, Pete Briscoe challenges us to live out this new identity in the 17th message of the series, Dance Lessons.

Is Jesus your drill sergeant or your dance instructor? Are you marching along, trying to be "good enough," trying to keep in step with everyone else? Jesus is calling you out of the march and into a dance with Him - sometimes messy, sometimes uncoordinated, but always focused on Christ, moved by Life with Him. In this message, Pete invites us to stop marching, stop watching the dance from the sidelines, and start dancing with life and joy! Taken from Jeremiah 31:13-14 and Colossians 2:6-10, this is the 1st message in Pete's 23-message series, Dance Lessons.

So what's the purpose of an abundant life on earth? Why doesn't Jesus just take us to heaven now, to enjoy life with Him there? Jesus said, "I have other sheep which are not of this sheep pen, I must bring them also." In this message, Stuart describes his last way for us to get a life, the purpose for our own abundant life – to bring the sheep who are outside our flock inside. Based on John 10:14-18, this is the final message in Stuart's 6-message series, Six Ways to Get a Life.

The word "commitment" is not high on many people's preference list nowadays. Have you noticed? Commitment asks a lot from us - it asks that we rely on people and not just ourselves, it asks that we live in terms of relationships. Commitment involves duty and obligation, and it requires us to trust others. Not many of us want to be committed to other people. But what about commitment to Christ? If you want to "get a life," you have to be committed for time and eternity to God. The good news is, He's has already utterly committed Himself to you. Based on John 12:20-29, this is the fifth message in Stuart Briscoe's series Six Ways to Get a Life.
