The Colossian Christians were being troubled by people who were confusing them and hindering their spiritual progress. Paul spoke forcibly to the issue and in so doing he reminds us that we should be on our guard against those who would be less than helpful to our spiritual lives.

Having begun their spiritual journey, the Colossians needed encouragement to continue as they had started because factors entered their lives that would take them off course.

John Bunyan's famous allegory, "Pilgrim's Progress," described the journey of the believer from the "slough of despond" to "the celestial city." In less picturesque terms, Paul did the same for the Colossians. We, too, need to know how to get there from here.

Paul's letter to the church in Colosse was written in the customary style of his day, but it contains truth of lasting importance for people in diverse cultures in all ages. His opening greetings contain much information about the beginnings of spiritual experience.

Our culture tells us that sexual satisfaction is found not with your spouse, but out there with someone else – anyone else. The worldly message is that life with just one person is boring and predictable. But God created sex and he had something much more wonderful in mind. God meant for sex to be between husband and wife, and he meant for it to be amazing. In this message, Pete helps us understand what God has planned for us.

"You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love." (Galatians 5:13) What's the key to a great marriage? It's something soon-to-be-married couples ask all the time! The answer: two people walking in the Spirit, loving one another. Put another way, you can choose to serve yourself (flesh) or serve your spouse, empowered by the Spirit! Your choice determines what kind of marriage you'll have. In this teaching, Pete addresses three questions: - How do I know when I’m in the flesh or in the Spirit? - How do I avoid the flesh? - How can I get into the Spirit?

Explosive arguments can hurt a marriage, but silence can destroy a relationship, too. When spouses keep unresolved issues to themselves, it's like filling a gunnysack. The more hurts are stuffed into it, the heavier it gets. And then one day it bursts open, and every past frustration pours out all at once. Has that happened to you? Has some inconsequential argument turned into a raging fight because your gunnysack finally burst? Be encouraged! Pete Briscoe turns to Scripture to describe how you can get rid of the gunnysack and strengthen your marriage.

About Stuart and Jill Briscoe

Stuart Briscoe uses wit and intellect to target your heart, capture your attention and challenge you to grow! You will find his logic compelling as he brings a fresh, practical perspective to the Scriptures. Born in England, Stuart left a career in banking to enter the ministry full time. He has written more than 50 books, received three honorary doctorates and preached in more than one hundred countries. He was senior pastor of Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin, for thirty years, and currently serves as minister-at-large.

Jill Briscoe was born in England and found Christ when she was 18 years old. She never looked back. Upon graduating from Cambridge University, she began working as a teacher by day and had a vigorous street ministry to the youths of Liverpool by night.

She met Stuart at a youth conference and they married in 1958. In the 50 years since, Jill has become a highly sought-after Bible teacher and author who travels around the world ministering to under-resourced churches and speaking at international seminars and conferences. Since 2000, she and Stuart, who was formerly senior pastor of Elmbrook Church for 30 years, have had the joy of equipping and encouraging believers across the globe in their roles as ministers-at-large for Elmbrook.

Jill has authored more than 40 books including devotionals, study guides, poetry and children's books. Her vivid, relational teaching style touches the emotions and stirs the heart. She serves as Executive Editor of Just Between Us, a magazine of encouragement for ministry wives and women in leadership, and served on the board of World Relief and Christianity Today, Inc., for over 20 years.

Jill and Stuart call suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin their home. When they are not traveling, they spend time with their three children, David, Judy and Peter, and thirteen grandchildren.
