Discipline - Who Needs It?

June 17, 2014
The contemporary debate on discipline has led to a dramatic decrease in child abuse and an equally dramatic increase in ill-disciplined children and many attendant social ills. But we must understand the significant role discipline plays in spiritual experience.

Based on Hebrews 12:4-13, this is the 7th message in Stuart Briscoe's series Keep the Faith.

Various metaphors have been used to describe the Christian life. Some see it as a war to be fought, others as a party to be enjoyed, others as a task to be completed, and still others as a race to be run. The writer of Hebrews chooses the race metaphor. Based on Hebrews 12:1-3, this is the 6th message in Stuart Briscoe's series Keep the Faith.

Having encouraged his readers to "keep the faith" despite the pressures under which they were living, and having delivered warnings to them about the dangers of abandoning the faith, our writer now defines, describes, and illustrates faith and hope so that there will be no confusion. Based on Hebrews 11:1-40, this is the 5th message in Stuart Briscoe's series Keep the Faith.

Faith is only as valuable as its object. Hope can be little more than wishful thinking. Disappointment follows and patience wears thin. Sound familiar? Based on Hebrews 6:1-20, this is the 4th message in Stuart Briscoe's series Keep the Faith.

"Whom we confess" and "the faith we profess" are both translations of the Greek word homologia, which is defined as "an act of proclamation in which the concrete relation of man to Jesus is expressed in binding and valid form." Jesus expressed the importance of such a homologia (Mt.10:32), and Hebrews confirmed it. Based on Hebrews 4:1-16, this is the 3rd message in Stuart Briscoe's series Keep the Faith.

Given the experiences they had gone through and the possibilities of further problems, it is understandable that some of the Hebrew Christians were possibly losing their nerve. They needed assurance, which the author of Hebrews provided for them and us. Based on Hebrews 10:19-39, this is the 2nd message in Stuart Briscoe's series "Keep the Faith."

Hebrews addressed a struggling group of Jewish believers discovering that discipleship would not be easy as Jesus had warned. In it they were encouraged to "keep the faith," warned of the dangers of failure to do so, and reminded how to mature in their faith. But they must be willing to move beyond faith's fundamentals to make progress and mature. Based on Hebrews 5:11-6:3, this is the 1st message in Stuart Briscoe's series Keep the Faith.

How do you stay when you really want to go? It's not easy. Abigail was a woman stuck in a difficult marriage with a difficult husband. But instead of being angry and vindictive, she showed godly wisdom and self-control in diffusing tensions, and remained committed to her marriage. In this message, Jill Briscoe walks us through Abigail's story and gives us an example of how to deal with the difficult people in our own lives. Based on 1 Samuel 21-25, this is the 7th message in Jill's 8-message study of women in the Old Testament.

When we think of influential leaders, we often think of those who make bold statements, those who are aggressive or loud. But not all change happens that way. Ruth changed her world using humble acts of love and kindness. Despite her circumstances, Ruth spent her life in service. She lived a life that exemplified love to those around her, particularly in caring for her mother-in-law, Naomi. Jill Briscoe teaches us how much we can learn from Ruth about being a true friend. This is the 6th message in Jill's study of women in the Old Testament and is taken from the book of Ruth and 1 Corinthians 13.

Every day we fight battles: teaching our kids to clean up their toys, dealing with difficult co-workers or family members, getting society to clean up the environment. But even though these battles are big, there is an even bigger war going on - a spiritual one. While we know that God is the ultimate victor, we live every day surrounded by Satan's armies. The judge and prophetess Deborah was surrounded by not only a spiritual war but a physical one! God gave her the gifts and talents she needed to complete the task He gave her. In this message from Judges, Jill shares with us Deborah's story and shows us how we, too, can respond to God and find our roles in this great battle.
