Stuart and Jill Briscoe

Christians in Exile, Part 2

September 20, 2016
Are we moving closer and closer to a state where Christians worldwide will live in exile, on the fringes of society? It's a growing concern as religious freedoms are usurped in exchange for the tolerance for other's perceived rights.

In this message Pete Briscoe points to the book of Daniel for answers about how Christians can successfully live and thrive in changing times, even when the world seems to be spiraling out of control.

This is the 1st message in the 17-message series Living in Exile: God Working Behind the Scenes.

Jill Briscoe will freely admit that even as a Christian, she struggles with worry - and she's not alone. Battling against worry and reclaiming the energy and abundant life that worry steals from us is a daily battle for so many people. Are you ready to learn how to rule worrisome situations and not be ruled by them? In this message, Jill shares the turning point in her life when she finally felt the worry war pivot in her favor - and it had a lot to do with studying the story of Joshua and the battle of Jericho.

Mark Twain said, "My life has been full of many problems, most of which never happened!" He presumably looked to the future with a degree of trepidation and spent a lot of time being anxious about things that actually never happened. Does that sound like something you do, too? Another great author, the Apostle Paul, said that no matter what happens - don't be anxious about anything. In this message from Philippians 4:4-9, Stuart Briscoe looks to Scripture to identify the formula for becoming worry-free, no matter what circumstance we are facing - or think we'll have to face.

Are you a fearful person? Are there circumstances in your life that make you anxious? There's plenty of evidence that worry and anxiety take a toll on us physically and emotionally, but often the experts' solutions only deal with surface symptoms. Meanwhile, God tells us: "Do not be afraid!" So how do we do it? Pete dives into Luke 2:8-10 to reiterate that no matter who you are or what might be weighing you down, there is a place you can find relief from your burdens.

God came in Christ to offer us forgiveness through the cross. He rose again the third day and set about bringing the world back home. "Talk to me," says the Father. "Prayer is the means; I have made a way." But there is a problem - we don't know how. Luke 11:1 & Matthew 6:9-14

A bewildered human race is like a man lost in a forest asking, "Father, are you there?" In 1945, at the end of World War II, Helmut Thielicke, a brilliant theologian, preaching through the Lord's Prayer to what was left of his congregation in the ruins of his church in Stuttgart said, "Everything will be all right so long as we hear His good voice calling to us above the howling of the wolves, above the sound of branches snapping, above the ominous noises around us. God is always there." A Christian worldview believes in the Fatherhood of God. Luke 11:1-5

In the midst of so much international and interpersonal turmoil, it is easy to wonder: Why is it like this? What is God doing? How can I possibly carry on in this chaotic world? These questions, incredibly pertinent today, were also asked by the psalmist of Israel several thousand years ago. In his message "Keep Calm and Carry On," Stuart Briscoe remembers life in World War II era Britain, and he uses Psalm 2 to confront the fear caused by the distressing circumstances of our current world with the sovereign plan of our mighty and holy God.

About Stuart and Jill Briscoe

Stuart Briscoe uses wit and intellect to target your heart, capture your attention and challenge you to grow! You will find his logic compelling as he brings a fresh, practical perspective to the Scriptures. Born in England, Stuart left a career in banking to enter the ministry full time. He has written more than 50 books, received three honorary doctorates and preached in more than one hundred countries. He was senior pastor of Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin, for thirty years, and currently serves as minister-at-large.

Jill Briscoe was born in England and found Christ when she was 18 years old. She never looked back. Upon graduating from Cambridge University, she began working as a teacher by day and had a vigorous street ministry to the youths of Liverpool by night.

She met Stuart at a youth conference and they married in 1958. In the 50 years since, Jill has become a highly sought-after Bible teacher and author who travels around the world ministering to under-resourced churches and speaking at international seminars and conferences. Since 2000, she and Stuart, who was formerly senior pastor of Elmbrook Church for 30 years, have had the joy of equipping and encouraging believers across the globe in their roles as ministers-at-large for Elmbrook.

Jill has authored more than 40 books including devotionals, study guides, poetry and children's books. Her vivid, relational teaching style touches the emotions and stirs the heart. She serves as Executive Editor of Just Between Us, a magazine of encouragement for ministry wives and women in leadership, and served on the board of World Relief and Christianity Today, Inc., for over 20 years.

Jill and Stuart call suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin their home. When they are not traveling, they spend time with their three children, David, Judy and Peter, and thirteen grandchildren.
