By Living Sacrificially

October 29, 2015
This concluding practical teachings of the Epistle to the Romans are based on an exhortation to "offer our bodies as living sacrifices." Whatever this means, we can be sure that it results in a lifestyle that is "pleasing to God." Making God smile is reason enough to explore it!

Based on Romans 12:1-2, this is the 5th teaching in Stuart's 6-message series, Making God Smile.

We have seen that an attitude of trusting obedience towards the Lord and careful attention to our personal behavior are vital if we are to please God. In this passage we will see that proper attitudes toward other people merit the smile of His approval, too. Based on I Timothy 2:1-8, this is the 4th teaching in Stuart's 6-message series, Making God Smile.

Pleasing ourselves is instinctual. Pleasing God does not come naturally. Therefore, we need to learn how to do it. In fact, we need to be convinced that we should do it. That is why Paul "instructed" the Thessalonians, carefully using a word with military connotations. Based on Thessalonians 4:1-12, this is the 3rd teaching in Stuart's 6-message series, Making God Smile.

This Scripture talks about "those who live according to the sinful nature" and those "who live in accordance with the Spirit." The former, we are told, cannot please God. If we wish to please God, we must give careful attention to what this means. Based on Romans 8:1-14, this is the 2nd teaching in Stuart's 6-message series, Making God Smile.

Enoch may not be a household name, but in his day, he had a great reputation. He was known as a man who pleased God. He made God smile because he "walked with God" in a loving, trusting relatiohship. Enoch knew "without faith it is impossible to please God." Based on Hebrews 11:1-6, this is the 1st teaching in Stuart's 6-message series, Making God Smile.

When you think of soldiers on a battlefield, you don't often think of those soldiers on their knees in prayer. But that is exactly how spiritual battles are fought - and won! God has given us two incredible weapons: the Bible and prayer. When we live in the Holy Spirit, he uses these weapons in powerful ways in our lives, teaching us new things, bringing to mind what we may have forgotten, and leading us where He wants us to go. Based on Ephesians 6:17-20, this is the 7th and final message in Pete Briscoe's series on spiritual warfare titled Disarming the Darkness.

Wearing a helmet instills confidence in the wearer. We know that our heads are protected and there is a lesser chance of injury. So why does Paul use the image of a helmet when he talks about salvation? How does the "helmet of salvation" protect us and give us confidence? And how can we be sure that we don't lose our salvation when we sin? Based on Ephesians 6:17, this is the 6th message in Pete Briscoe's series on spiritual warfare titled Disarming the Darkness.

We exercise faith every day - from the chair we sit in to the car we drive. We put our faith and trust in many things. So why is it so hard for us to put our trust in Jesus, the only one who is completely trustworthy? Why do we put our faith in works-based salvation, human tradition, or other "hollow and deceptive philosophies" instead of Jesus, who freely gives us the gift of salvation by grace through faith? When we put our faith in Jesus, He is our shield and protector from Satan's deception. When Jesus is our shield, we don't need to worry because we have everything we need. Based on Ephesians 6:16, this is the 5th message in Pete Briscoe's series on spiritual warfare titled Disarming the Darkness.

If you were asked what the "gospel" or "good news" is, what would you say? In Ephesians 6, Paul tells us to "stand firm in the gospel." But what exactly is the gospel? Many of us might say the gospel is that Jesus died for our sins. While the cross is part of it, the whole gospel is so much more! And if we want to "stand firm" in the gospel, we need to understand what it is, so that we can stand firm against Satan's assault of lies. Based on Ephesians 6:15, this is the 4th message in Pete Briscoe's series on spiritual warfare titled Disarming the Darkness.

All of humanity has a problem: unrighteousness. Ever since Adam and Eve realized their unrighteousness and used fig leaves to try to cover up their nakedness, we've been trying to make our own fig-leaf coverings. However, when we put our faith in Christ, He removes our filthy rags of unrighteousness and clothes us in His righteousness. So why do we still see ourselves as unrighteous, and how can we "stand firm with the breastplate of righteousness in place"? Based on Ephesians 6:14, this is the 3rd message in Pete Briscoe's series on spiritual warfare titled Disarming the Darkness.
