Waiting on the Lord, Part 4

October 18, 2012
Our only hope for true peace comes from the Lord. In the New Testament, Jesus tells us everything we need to know to have rest for our souls. Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” God promises His blessings on those who pursue Him.

The most important thing we can do as believers is become students of God’s Word. Everything that we need for life is in the pages of Scripture. The beauty of being God’s children is that He opens our spiritual eyes and gives us insights into His word that no one else can have. Don’t neglect this vital part of your walk with the Lord!

Do you find yourself fitting in with unbelievers around you? Are they comfortable spending time with you? More importantly, are you comfortable spending time with them? If you aren’t noticeably different from unbelievers, it’s time to re-evaluate your spiritual life. Christ challenges us to be different from the world, and the only way we can do this is by strengthening our relationship with Him.

Are we like the Israelites were in Isaiah’s day? They were focused only on themselves and their own circumstances. They didn’t turn to the Lord for guidance or deliverance. We need to learn from this! Instead of trying to work things out on our own, our first instinct should be to trust the Lord.

God’s warnings to Israel in Isaiah are applicable to us today, too. We need to have a solid foundation on the Rock that is Jesus Christ or when the storms of life come we will fall. Giving our lives completely over to Christ is the only way to avoid the pitfalls of the enemy. Thanks for listening.

1 Corinthians 6:12 says, “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful.” In Isaiah 28 we see what happens when men consume alcohol. Pastor Jeff warns believers against indulging in what some people consider Christian liberties. Even though we tell ourselves that things are okay, there are always consequences for our actions.

In today’s study, Pastor Jeff encourages us not to yield to our weaknesses. Our flesh can be hard to resist, but when we give in, we make ourselves vulnerable to the enemy. In the Old Testament, we see that Israel rejected the Lord, and her cities were pillaged over and over again by the enemy. Don’t let your flesh get the best of you!

In Isaiah 27, the prophet compares God’s people to a vineyard. God waters us, prunes us, and protects us so that we can grow. This is a demonstration of how much God loves us. He cares enough to watch over us, correct us, and restore us so that we can be in fellowship with Him.

Often, God brings trials and tribulations into our lives in order to make us conscious of our need to pray. Remember David’s pain after the death of his son with Bathsheba? Once He turned to the Lord, David was immediately forgiven and healed. We will always find forgiveness in the name of the Lord.

The most important thing to have in our walk with the Lord is faith. Faith brings about patience. We see in Isaiah 25 and 26 that when we wait upon the Lord, He will bring about our salvation, and bring our enemies low. We don’t need to take justice into our own hands. We simply wait upon the Lord, and He will always prove Himself faithful and true.

1 Corinthians 15:55 says, “O death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your victory?” Throughout Isaiah, we see that through Christ we are delivered from death and it has no power over us. Our earthly lives are just a waiting period for something better — whether Christ comes in our lifetime or not, we will see Him face to face.
