Orders from Headquarters, Part 1

June 28, 2012
God doesn’t give us orders lightly. In today’s study, Paul rebukes the Thessalonians who were neglecting the poor and less fortunate among them. They weren’t following God’s orders. Pastor Jeff encourages us to reach out and help those who are hurting. Instead of being lazy and ignoring God’s commands, we must pay close attention to the directions God gives us in His Word.

Are you willing to work? In today’s study, Pastor Jeff differentiates between those who can work and those who just won’t work. Have a care that you don’t judge people unfairly! But God does require that those who are physically and mentally able apply themselves diligently to whatever work they have before them. One such way we work is by sharing the gospel with others around us.

God commands us to be holy no matter what situation we’re in. Sometimes this means that we won’t be able to do the same things our companions are doing. When we aren’t profitably occupied, we run the risk of falling into idle or even wicked activities. Don’t allow this to happen to you — occupy till the Lord comes with things that please Him.

As we get into 2 Thessalonians 3, Paul warns us against spots in the Love Feast. Beware of those in the congregation who don’t take seriously the work of Christ, and who don’t follow His commands! Pastor Jeff exhorts us to be diligent in our own walk so that we don’t become one of these spots ourselves.

Have you ever stopped to ponder the true power of the gospel? It is complex enough that the most intelligent men strive to comprehend it, yet even a small child can understand and receive salvation. It speaks to all people — every culture and every age. As believers, we are God’s army and it is our responsibility to spread His word throughout the world.

Don’t underestimate the power of the Word of God. The Lord gives us the job of spreading the gospel, but we certainly don’t have the power to save. God’s Word is more powerful and persuasive than any physical force, and is strong enough to change even the hardest heart.

Here Paul urges the church to guard the teachings of the Scripture. The number one way we do this is through our actions. If our words and actions are aligned with the truth, we can help maintain the purity of the Word. A side effect of standing for the truth is that we can bless and minister to others.

Paul constantly warned the churches against those who would try to disrupt and divide the people of God. Satan knows that when the church turns on one another, it is weak and susceptible to evil. Pastor Jeff encourages us to turn to the Word for protection from deceivers. When we’re steeped in the truth, we won’t be tricked by false teachings.

Don’t underestimate God. He knows what we need, and He provides strength for each day. When we rely on Him, God blesses our efforts, and He allows us to overcome our trials, and in turn be an encouragement to those who are struggling. Pastor Jeff also warns us not to be careless and neglect the Word in these last days. We must guard the truth and not allow others to pervert it.

How exactly does God’s election work? Some people think that this means that we don’t need to pray or evangelize because God has already chosen who will be saved and who will not. But Pastor Jeff reminds us that we are to be co-laborers with Christ! He calls us to pray and to evangelize the lost so that they might come to Him.

How are we to live today? God tells us to be thankful, and to constantly strengthen our prayer lives in preparation for His coming. In today’s study, Pastor Jeff talks about God’s chosen people. Each of us who know the Lord has been chosen to receive salvation. God knew our weaknesses and anger before we were saved, and yet He loved us still.
