New Years Eve Message
December 27, 2012
Isaiah 53:5 says, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities...and with his stripes we are healed.” As we learned last week, there was no other way for our sins to be absolved. Christ’s death was mandatory in order for us to receive salvation. On our own, we could only find suffering and eternal destruction, but through the sacrifice of the lamb we have eternal life.

As you celebrate Christmas, remember that Christ came to earth for the salvation of all people. His example should encourage us to spread His joy and peace with everyone we come across this holiday season. Sometimes we are afraid to share the gospel openly, but Pastor Jeff reminds us that God has given us His Holy Spirit to embolden us to share Christ’s love.

As we celebrate Christ’s birthday, remember that He came to earth in the most human way possible. He didn’t come in glory; He came in humility. But Christ’s birth means that we are free from our sins, and are delivered from the world.  Our future is now life in Christ instead of death in our sins.

In the Old Testament, people were required to bring a spotless, perfect lamb as a sacrifice. This symbolized Christ’s death, which was to come. After the cross, this ritual was finished. Christ’s death was sacrifice enough to cover the past and future sins of the entire human race. He is the ultimate sacrificial lamb, without spot and without blemish.

Through His suffering and death, Christ became the atonement for our sins. We often find it hard to believe that God would allow His Son to die, but that just shows us how much He loves us. Christ’s work on the cross changed our lives — instead of death and eternal torment, we have the promise of life and eternal existence in heaven. With these encouraging thoughts, let’s now hear from Pastor Jeff.

Have you ever stopped to ponder the cost of salvation? Though salvation is free for us, someone had to the pay the price for the sins of the entire human race. Today, Pastor Jeff starts a sobering study on “The Cost of Redemption” so that we might understand just how much Christ endured in order for us to have eternal life.

Throughout our study of Isaiah, we’ve learned that Israel was very willful, and God allowed them to be taken into captivity three different times. We always reap what we sow. When Israel turned against God, He used the Egyptians, the Assyrians, and the Babylonians in turn to bring His people back. We can learn from Israel’s example. What will God need to do in order to turn you back to Him?

Not only does God promise to deliver us, but He also imparts these promises to our children. Proverbs 22:6 says “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” If we honor God’s commands to teach our children the things of the Lord, God promises that He will honor our commitment to Him.

Despite being God’s chosen people, Israel went through intense trials and tribulations because of their disobedience. Yet God still held them safely in the palm of His hand, and eventually delivered them because of His great love. In the same way, God will protect and deliver us, despite the difficulties we may go through in this present life.
