God Rules! Part 2

November 19, 2012
The Christian’s life is not easy. In fact, we often experience struggles so difficult that we begin to doubt. In 1 Peter 4:12, Peter says, “Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you.” God allows us to suffer so that we might grow and change for His glory. Don’t lose heart, because God always has a purpose, even when we’re going through it.

As we get into Isaiah 41, we see God as the ultimate Judge. He reigns over every part of the earth, and He always rules in favor of those who love Him. Revelation 22:13 says, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” We have comfort knowing that our Lord is in control of every aspect of the world, and He has been since the beginning of time.

How great is your God? In Isaiah we see that many trusted in idols made by man. These idols were worthless. In the same way, we often trust in material riches or man’s strength. Remember that we serve a God without limitations. No matter how hard your situation is, God is bigger!

In the Old Testament, we see that when David was a shepherd, he risked his life to fight predators that would harm his flock. He even fought lions and bears with his bare hands! Here, Isaiah compares Jesus Christ to a gentle shepherd. There is nothing He will not do in order to protect us and keep us close to Him.

As we begin Isaiah 40, we see how much Jesus cares for His people. One way He does this is by offering us comfort. Yes, He convicts and corrects us; but He has given us the special gift of His Holy Spirit who dwells within us and comforts us in the midst of every trial and tribulation.

Though Hezekiah was blessed with an extension on life, we learn from Isaiah that he became proud and didn’t follow the Lord. Sometimes God lets us have our own way in order to teach us that He is sovereign. We cannot predict the ways that God will work; but we do know that His ways are always perfect. Thanks for listening.

How far does your faith take you? Are you trusting in man’s strength or in the Lord’s strength? Hezekiah pleaded with the Lord, and he was granted 15 more years of life. What we learn here is that God wants us to pray to Him. When we turn to Him in prayer, He delights to bless us. But we must also remember that we should pray for God’s will to be done, and not our own.

Sometimes the Lord gives us trials to help us reevaluate our lives. God told Hezekiah that he was close to death and that he needed to prepare to meet the Lord. Maybe most of us won’t experience this kind of wakeup call, but God will put struggles in our paths that help us to see what’s truly important in life.

As we continue through Isaiah 37, Pastor Jeff points out that Hezekiah had the right perspective. Instead of giving into Sennacherib’s demands, Hezekiah put his eyes on the Lord and trusted in Him. God was foremost in Hezekiah’s life, and his actions make that clear. Whatever is in your heart will be revealed through your actions.

What are you going to do when your back is against the wall? Hezekiah was faced with a fearsome enemy that could easily wipe out Jerusalem. But he was confident in the Lord’s power, and He knew that prayer was the answer. When you’re out of options, will you give in to man? Or will you turn to the Lord in prayer?

Have you ever felt intimidated and overwhelmed by the enemy? In Isaiah 36, we see the Assyrian king try to scare Hezekiah into turning against the Lord. But Hezekiah knew that the Lord would protect Jerusalem. Do you have peace that God will keep you safe from the enemy? The only way to have this kind of faith is by getting into the Word of God.
