Blessings from Obedience

The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite three months. And the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and all his household. - 2 Samuel 6:11

Obed-Edom, a Gittite and Levite kept the Ark of the Lord in his house and for three months, his household was blessed. The Lord blessed him and everyone in his household, not because he was special, but because he was obedient to the Lord. He was of the house of Kohath, which the Lord had charged to take care of the Ark (Numbers 4:15).

When Obed-Edom took the Ark into his house, he was obedient to care for it. However, it was David’s choice to leave the Ark at Obed-Edom’s house. David was angry with God for striking Uzzah dead, and he feared bringing the Ark to Jerusalem. Because of David’s fear, the Ark was left behind and the household of Obed-Edom was blessed. He had the presence of God in his home.

Learn from Obed-Edom and David. Get the presence of God in your life; there are no blessings apart from the presence of God; no blessings. God has to be in the center of your life; He has to shine in your life.

When God is first in our lives, we are obedient to Him and the calling He has for us. That is why we are blessed, because we are walking according to His plan for us. When we make God second, third or last in our lives, we will miss out on His great blessings, because we will not be obedient to Him. We will be obedient to our own plans, which will not produce blessings.

Though no man merits assurance by his obedience, yet God usually crowns obedience with assurance.
