He Satisfies

Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness. - Psalm 107:8-9

In 1789, George Washington issued the first Thanksgiving proclamation, asking Americans to be thankful for the conclusion of America’s war of independence and the creation of our government. He knew it was all due to the great goodness of God.

I love this verse because it really speaks of the goodness of God. We see exactly why we should give thanks to the Lord. Look at what it says: He satisfies the longing of the souls and fills our souls with goodness. Without God, there is no goodness in our souls.

Remember what the prophet Jeremiah said: “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked;…” (Jeremiah 17:9). The heart of man is wicked, and God alone can fill our hearts with goodness. For this alone, we should give thanks, but because He fills our souls with goodness, we are saved. On our own, none of us could enter heaven.

This is the heart of thanksgiving—the knowledge that we need a Savior—the realization that without God there is no hope. We give thanks to God, for without Him, we are heading for eternity in hell.

Our souls long and hunger for God, because we were created by Him to have fellowship with Him. Without His great goodness, we would continue to hunger for Him, with no hope of redemption—nothing to end the longing.

It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits.
