Doing Evil in God’s Sight

Why have you despised the commandment of the Lord,to do evil in His sight? - 2 Samuel 12:9

Look at this verse closely; there are two truths in the question the Lord presented to David. First, he was guilty of despising the commandments of the LORD. When David had willfully disobeyed the Scriptures, his actions showed that he had developed a sinful contempt towards God’s Holy Word.

Second, David’s evil actions were done in full view of God’s sight. God was fully aware of David’s actions and had seen every sin he had committed. Psalm 121:4 says: Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. That is a comforting thought; God never sleeps and He watches over us as we rest. He sees everything we say and do! You can never sweep sin under the carpet to get away from the judgment of God.

David as King was the people’s leader and he knew God’s Word. Therefore, God held him accountable in his knowledge of the Scriptures. I especially exhort leaders and the body of Christ as they listen week after week to God’s Word in church that, “to much has been given, to those, much more will be required” (Luke 12:48).

We are apt to do evil when we do not reverence and obey the Scriptures.  I have this phrase written in my Bible, “This book will keep you from sin, but sin will keep you from this book.

Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.
~
Psalm 119:11~
