You are the Man

Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man!” - 2 Samuel 12:7

David, from his own lips had just pronounced the judgment of death. The rich man deserved to die when he took, killed and then servedthe poor man’s lamb, for his guest’s dinner. David opened his mouth before thinking. He should have examined his own heart. Nathan told him, “You are the man!”He was the man.

Hearing those words from Nathan must have come as a complete shock. The story had served its purpose, David needed to look athimself in the mirror and come to understand he wasthe man! He was the one who deserved the death penalty. Davidhad to face the reality of his hidden sin, fully and completely. All God wanted was for David to repent.

Nathan’s words must have felt as if a sword had been thrust through his heart. God’s Word confronts sin in our lives and leads us to repentance. Hebrews 4:12 tells us:

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

It is important to learn from David’s mistakes. If you are in any sin, it would be best to humble yourself before God and ask for forgiveness before you are caught and exposed (1 John 1:9).

Man cannot cover what God would reveal.
