Deserving of Judgment
So David’s anger was greatly aroused against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the Lordlives, the man who has done this shall surely die! And he shall restore fourfold for the lamb, because he did this thing and because he had no pity.” - 2 Samuel 12:5-6
After hearing the whole story, David’s righteous anger was aroused and without hesitation he condemns the rich man to death. Interestingly, David contrasts the LORD who lives eternally because he deserved judgment due to his actions and his lack of pity. Before judgment was to be executed the rich man would have to recompense the poor man four times for the one lamb.
Notice how David was quick to judge this man but he was guilty and deserving of judgment himself for his own sins. As sinners, we often judge others, but we are all deserving of God’s judgment (Romans 2:1-11). Remember, God is just in His sentence against sinners: For the wages of sin is death... yet He has also shown great pity towards us... but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23). God’s character has both righteous anger and great pity; it would be wise to ask Him to pardon our sins:
Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in mercy. He will again have compassion on us, and will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all oursins into the depths of the sea (Micah 7:18-19).
Those whose hearts are not pierced by the sword of God’s justice shall certainly be cut down and destroyed by the ax of His judgments.
