Illuminating Injustice
And a traveler came to the rich man, who refused to take from his own flock and from his own herd to prepare one for the wayfaring man who had come to him; but he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.” - 2 Samuel 12:4
Remember Nathan, the Prophet, is still telling the story to David. He told him about the poor man who had one lamb compared with the many flocks the rich man had. This precious lamb was like a pet to the family, but the rich man took it and served it for his guest’s dinner.
God through Nathan will help David to see this man’s unjust actions. In turn, the story would help David to realize the injustice of his own actions and the horrible sins he had committed.
In the New Testament, Jesus often used stories called parables to help those listening to understand a spiritual truth. He used examples that would relate to the people, such as sowing seeds. Some understood, some repented and others reacted in anger:
Now when the chief priests and Pharisees heard His parables, they perceived that He was speaking of them. But when they sought to lay hands on Him, they feared the multitudes, because they took Him for a prophet - (Matthew 21:45-46).
What about you and me? When reading God’s Word how do we react when convicted about the injustices we have committed?
