Consequences of Sin Unchecked

“Tell it not in Gath, proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon—Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph. O mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew nor rain upon you, nor fields of offerings. For the shield of the mighty is cast away there! The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.” - 2 Samuel 1:20-21

Gath was the capitol of the Philistines—the chief religious center, where they worshipped so many gods and idols. David did not want the news of Saul and Jonathan’s death to be proclaimed in Gath, because he did not want the heathens to celebrate their deaths.

He went on to say the anointing of Saul was gone. Again, David did not want the heathens to take credit for Saul’s fall. God allowed Saul’s defeat. He allowed the Philistines to defeat Saul, because He had removed His anointing from Saul. God was just using the Philistines to accomplish his purposes.

I have seen this happen too many times. I have seen the anointed of God brought down, because they lost their heart for God, and in their rebellion they lost their anointing. I have been in the presence of these people. They deny their sin, and then they are found out. As a result, they lose their wives, children friends and their church. You cannot trust them.

Remember, you cannot hide your sin from God. He will give you the opportunity to repent, but if you refuse, He will bring you down, just as Saul was taken down. God will not allow sin and rebellion to go unchecked.

He who swims in sin will sink in sorrow.
